Is the economic downturn in the USA affected tourism in Cancun?

I agree viva Mexico!! The unfortunate thing is that Mexico is deed will be affected if not by tourism, it will be through trading and the international market. Cancun I think is not going to be affected too much because the mexican government injects lots and lots of money into Cancun to preserve it.

With fuel prices going up, airlines charging for checked luggage, and cutting flights, I would say yes it is and will hurt tourism all over Mexico and the Caribbean.

People from USA are cutting back on everything. Fuel, food prices and higher inflation are hurting the American economy. People are losing their jobs and homes. Vacation is not on the list of priorities.

On the bright side, hopefully we can rebound quickly and 2009 will be better. God Bless the USA.

We go to Mazatlan every year and this year the locals were saying that tourists from the US are down considerably over past years but canadians are up.
