You can't bring anything that would be illegal in the United States (drugs, for instance). Fresh foods can't be imported to the U.S. and will be confiscated at the border. It's also illegal to take genuine pre-Columbian artifacts out of Mexico.

anything that is considered illegal in the US. that includes cuban cigars. you also can't bring in pork, beyond a single portion to be consumed as a meal for that day. and you can't bring live vegitation. you can't bring domestic animals without a notorized letter of health, unless they are babies. no exotic animals. if you are under 21, no alchohol. and in fact, you can be issued an MIP at the border if you do have alchohol.

Apart from all the things you'd expect - food/plant products, drugs, Cuban cigars - booze if your are under 21 etc.

Sometimes the paper mache products that are sold as souvenirs are hardened using gasoline, for this reason they may not be allowed on a plane if you are flying.

Fresh fruits and vegetables. I wouldn't suggest prescription meds unless you have a US prescription. Pirated goods. Oh, check the Dept. of State web site, they have more info.

If you are asking for a tourist and not commercially -
Anything illegal to posess in the USA is illegal to transport across the border. It also has to be concievably for personal use and not for selling in the USA. In other words, non-Cuban cigars, legal medicine (take a prescription to show), booze, etc are all OK unless you have a whole lot of it. Your pharmicist in the states would not let you have more than a 90 day supply of anything. You're local 7-eleven would not sell you wholesale lots of tobacco or alcohol. Why would customs let you cross with such items?
Rule of thumb-
If it can be taxxed by either country, bought in the duty-free shop, shipped via normal commercial carriers, paid for with a credit card, or bought at a reputable hotel gift shop or mall, you can bring it to the USA. When in doubt, buy it on your credit card and have the seller ship it. If they are unwilling to do this (leaving a paper trail of the sale), forget it.

No meats or meat products. No fruit, vegetables or unprocessed plant materials in general. No prescription drugs purchased in Mexico. No more than 2 liters of hard alchohol per adult over 21. no more than 1 carton of cigarettes per adult over 18. nothing listed on schedule 1 or 2 of CITES, you can't get an export permit any longer. No products from Cuba, including Cigars, Rum, etc..... the list goes on.

Drugs, and any type of seed. I believe you can have fresh fruits and vegetable that you will consume on your way over here as long as it doen't have any seeds.
