It all depends on on the beach where are you, Normally the beach of Mexico are safe and the government regulates the anomalies..

I swam in the sea at various locations in Mexico - it wasn't any more dangerous than swimming in the sea anywhere else.

well any sea is dangerous, but whoever told you that needed to be more specific.
they could have meant that there are a lot of riptides in one area or something, or they could have meant that there's a lot of sharp coral around.
it really depends on the exact location and time of year, but before you go swimming anywhere (in a public area) there will be some sort of notice if there's anything danderous in the water.

Depends on where you go. Most Pacific Coast beaches are fine, but most people stay in the hotel pools because the swim-up bar is there.
On Cozumel, the beaches on the west side of the island are great, but on the east side of the island, you have to be a very strong swimmer. For that reason, all the hotels are on the west side of the island.

It's dangerous only if you consider having fun and a great time by doing it.

MÃ©xico has great beaches and everyone of them has a sea so beautiful and calm, that you'll become addictive to it.

Undertows, riptides and sharks. Never go off swimming by yourself, ask the townspeople where the safest swimming areas are, even so never throw caution to the wind and abide by the rules and regulations that are posted on the signs. Anywhere you swim may have some danger, just because you are in another country doesn't make it safer. Jellyfish, sharks, sea creatures you disturb if stepped on may attack, just use good judgement and be thankful if you come home with all your body parts. Peace.

Its no more dangerous than any other country, most of beaches in the tourist areas are man made and gentle shelving into the sea.

Any sea is dangerous to swim in if you go too deep, if you mean like near the shore, no problem.
If you plan going farther be careful.
But always ask the locals, like at the Hotel Reception.

there are strong undercurrants in the sea you have to be careful when swimming dont swim alone always have someone with you better still use the swimming pool in the hotel it doesnt get the undercurrants

Like most large water areas, it would depend entire on the area you plan to swim in....some have fast currents, tides, sea animals like jellyfish may be harmful.....
Overall, I'd say it's safer than the Baja Pacific Coast which has dangerous rip currents.
