Long Weekend in Mexico...no lame tourist places like Cancun or Cabo...where to go? DF? Guanjuato? Puebla?

I live in Puebla and have lived in Guanajuato and they are both great places for a long weekend. If I had to choose one, I would choose Guanajuato. It is my favorite city in Mexico. Ixtapa is just like Cancun.

It all depends on how you would like to spend your weekend I would say Guanjuato it has a bit tourist but it is a great place Chihuahua is a great place but it still a bit big but not many tourist at all.

Tourist places abound...you might try San Felipe Baja California..warmer temps not completely destroyed by Spring Breakers. Of the ones you mentioned, Puebla would my choice.

Guanajuato is gorgeous! Really colonial, hilly, beautiful. Also in the State of Jalisco are San Juan de los Lagos and Lago de Morenos...both are beautiful.

I am a well travelled human being. A former Pan American stewardess all over the world in the 1960's and I am now living in a lively cultural small city in Mexico called:-
San Miguel de Allende, state of Guanajuato, it is all Colonial and this is where the Independence took place, and Dolores Hidalgo is nearby. There's a lot to do here, I love it.
Take a flight from CA to Leon, GTO international airport, and a shuttle to San Miguel, or go from Houston or Dallas - Leon.

You'll love Puerto Escondido, in Oaxaca on the Pacific Coast. It is the antithesis of places you mention you want to avoid.

I've traveled in Mexico for years. All of the places mentioned are great, but Ixtapa is just another tourist resort like Cancun. Avoid it. I love the very tip of the Baja ,.... Cabo San Lucas,where two oceans meet. In many ways, it doesn't even seem like Mexico. Puebla is a terrific city, and that would be an excellent choice as well. Ditto for Guanjuato.

Try Merida, there is nice concerts, theatre and art exhibits.....Aeromexico, Continental fly there depending on what city you live in, many mexican cities offer weekend concerts in the parks, but in Merida they have daily events.........the town's main square is Plaza Mayor referred to as El Centro, most of Merida's attractions are within walking distance from downtown, you can also take bus tours.....for a weekend away it's off the beaten track from the more popular destinations like Cancun, or Cabo. The Fiesta Americana Merida is a fantastic hotel, their is a shopping centre right in the hotel.

check out >> Ixtapa, MEXICO....My son takes his family ( betterhalf and their 2 boys, to Ixtapa every year..its a wonderful ClubMed resort...it has perfect things for the boys 8 and 12 to do separatly from the parents with what you might call individual organizors that stay with them and watch their every move.. All kinds of activities for age groups..Like my 8 yr old grandson learned how to fly on the high trapeze, that was his choice, no coercing of any kind...I now have moving pictures of him flying high:)..the 12 yr old played some ball tossing like yo yo up in the air and catching in on a string/rope or like..The boys have so much fun getting back together with parents for lunch and dinner, they can't wait to tell them what all they did during the day for fun.....I highly recomend it.. I believe they spent over a week there..There is so much to do for the parents and single people!! :D
