Looking to live in Mexico? |
In the far future, I'm 100% sure I'm going to move to Mexico. At home, I'm taking a National Diploma in Business and one in Spanish. Then at university, I'm going to be doing a Spanish marketing course (if possible) in open businesses in and throughout spanish speaking countries, mainly larger ones ie, Mexico.
I've googled Mexico and I have looked on road view on Google Earth, and Google Maps. I've noticed that the parts I have looked at in detail seem to be more tourist specified on the East coast, but I'm a little unsure if the West is equally as nice as the East. Are they just as good, is one nicer etc?
Also, as I'm interested in living there, are there any states that are best for immigrants etc....cheapest, expensive, more tourist like. Which would be the most suitable for a young woman living on her own to invest in a house and some land (HAS to be near the coat, that is a must). Also, in the middle of a small sized town where a job would be fairly local and easy access to the shops etc so I'm not out of reach of necessities.
I know this will be expensive that's why I'm using a lot of time in college and uni, and I will also be getting a job and opening a savings account etc. My question(s) are about which area would be the best for me to move there money wise, and location wise.
I'm fair active, I will want to be near a beach that I can swim in the sea of, somewhere it's close to the shops, nightlife isn't really too important, but need somewhere that has something to offer. I'm particularly interested in the North East of Mexico..... the states of Tamaulipas, Yucatan, Veracruz, Campeche or Tabasco.
Also, any other info, facts a little something helpful you have on Mexico is appreciated. |

Re-marks:
West Coast is a lot more tourist Friendly, If you want to Focus on 'North East" you are eliminating Can Cun, I would suggest your look into Tampico in Tamaulipas or El Puerto de Veracurz in Veracruz.
One other note, Meixcan Law limits Foreigners on the Purchase of land and property within a certain distance with Int'l Borders and Coastal Areas, there are ways to do it any way but just be aware of this. (National Security)
Money wise, you should not have any problems anywhere in Mexico, suggest you first open an account with a small qty and then wire the money. |

Read this article on Moving to Mexico.
Mexico is realtively inexpensive to live. However, your wages are also relatively low. Your wages are paid by the day, not by the hour. A professional can earn about 1000 peso per month.
We will be moving to Mexico, but we are at retirement age. You sound like you want to work there when you finish school.
Mazatlan, Sinaloa on the pacific coast is where we are moving. We like because it has all kinds of housing available, entertainment, familiar American chain stores (although we are Canadian).
There are a lot of local areas within the city that are away from the tourist areas and have affordable housing.
Foreigners cannot own land near the coast - you lease the land (99 years it seems). |

I personally live in Mexico and I wouldn't recommend tamaulipas (where I live) nor Vercacruz to live in. These places aren't too much of a tourist attraction and a lot of narcotic families live here. However, Yucatan and Campeche are gorgeous! They are the most beautiful places in Mexico. I would recommend finding a place in Cancun or near it. But anywhere in Yucatan or Campeche you could probably find great deals, beaches, and most likely no narcotic problems. :) Good luck. |

It sounds like you've never been to Mexico.
Without experiencing the country first, moving there is not a good idea.
I plan to move, but I know the country well having been there many times and having seen 19 states plus Mexico City. I will have social security and a small pension. Trying to make a living there won't be easy. You will probably be surprised at the red tape you face.
The beaches along the gulf coast are nowhere near the quality of those along the Pacific and in Quintana Roo.
Someplace near Puerto Vallarta may be a good choice mfor you, near the beach but not too far from the advantages offered inland. There are cultural things you can find in a city like Guadalajara that aren't available on the coast.
You really need to go down and explore so you know what your getting into. Goggling and asking questions here can not substitute for experiencing Mexico directly.
Several weeks of exploration are need. I would recommend more than one trip before moving.

I am going to recommend you read two books. They give a realistic picture of Mexico and Mexican culture.
"People's Guide to Mexico" by Carl Franz
http://www.peoplesguide.com/
and "Head for Mexico" by Don Adams.
Understand there are many hoops to jump through to start a business in Mexico. Your planning and conceptualization are good. I would suggest you visit Mexico yourself. Spend several months here visiting areas to see where the need for your business product might be greatest.
Are you planning to market to market to wealthy Mexicans or Gringos or both? There are beautiful resorts on either coast and each has its own personality. |

There are places where there are many Canadians and americans living in mexico. San Miguel Allende and Chapala. I don't remember the state that San Miguel is but Chapala is in Jalisco and it is close to Guadalajara which is a nice metropolis, also there are places in the Mayan riviera that many people have chosen as a place to live. Monterrey N.L. but is very hot in the summer there. Good luck |

I guess the area you're looking at for moving isn't the best. The east coast of Mexico isn't the best for beach activities or cultural life or finding decent jobs, the industries that have been developed there are mostly oil and freight forwarding (Veracruz is one of our main commercial ports). There aren't many tourists established here, either. It's true that there are many in San Miguel de Allende (state of Guanajuato but not too close to any major city), Valle de Bravo (+/- 2 hours away from Mexico City), but there places are mostly for retired people, not for those who want to find a job. The best places to find job opportunities would be Queretaro or Aguascalientes (both are state capitals) but none of those are close to the coast.
I would say that Puerto Vallarta, in the west coast of Mexico, is far better for you to find what you're looking for, and it's not too far from Guadalajara, which is the 2nd most important city in the country (but I DON'T recommend you to live there). Vallarta is a smallish town with an old feeling yet with lots of nightlife, shopping and cultural life. Yes, it's expensive to live there.... but I guess you could also find a decent job. Beaches aren't great (a bit rocky, but if you go father north or south they're nice) but you can swim in the ocean and the weather is great.
It is true that you, as a foreigner, are not allowed to own land or properties in Mexico. You would have to become a Mexican citizen in order to purchase property here. Anyhow, hopefully your dream can come true. |
