MEXICO ESL HELP ?

Hello, I am thinking about going to Mexico to teach ESL (I would get certified through ITTO--a tefl program in Guadalajara) but when I asked on Dave's ESL cafe for some advice all I got were negative replies. They told me that since I am not certified to teach in the US then I will not be able to ever get a good job in Mexico and that the schedules are terrible, the pay sucks, the students are terrible, etc. (basically everything terrible which makes me not understand why they are doing it). I have lived in Mexico before and I KNOW that the cost of living is considerably lower than that of the US so obviously the pay is lower. I would just like to know if anyone on here has gone to get certified and teach ESL in Mexico (without being a teacher in their home country) and has actually enjoyed it.

I understand that my first year of working would probably not be the best job, but isn't it possible to move up with experience as in any other job?

Also, have any of you taught in either Monterrey or Guadalajara?

Thanks!

I think richard is right. Teenagers will be as all Teenager are in all countries. And I think both Guadalajara or Monterrey are ok, both are very big cities.
hope you get a nice job and Welcome to MEXIco

PS, I live in Queretaro and is quite a nice city not as big as Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Go to some Universities in Guadalajara or Monterrey I think that there you can teach ESL... go ahead and enjoy... I've lived in Guadalajara is my native city... is so nice...

I think a good private school will be glad to talk to you. You get the training, and they in return probably for a smaller fee, will get someone with great spelling and an accent in return. Sell yourself (you know what I mean)

Remember it is another country and even if you are not certified to teach in the states yet, that doesn't mean you cant either be an assistant, or a private teacher in another country.

Universities are also an option.

Best of luck.

Hello is ESL English? the students in Mexico you will find are nicer than in the USA generally. As far as them needing teachers now, I reccommend getting a job first before coming here to stay. I am at Guadalajara now. Good Luck
Mexico Connects has a message board too.

There is a very good chapter on ESL teaching in "Head for Mexico" by Don Adams. Mi esposo has taught ESL, mostly volunteer, and found it very rewarding.

You can volunteer to teach ESL in Mexico to children in elementary school. They appreciate very much.
