You had better postpone your flight or take a bus. US regulations require a passport to re-enter the U S. |

Since January, all re-entry by AIR to the US from Mexico requires a passport and you can be sure the airlines will screen you before letting you board. Land re-entry to the US (bus, drive, pedestrian) will not require the passport until next year. But you still need to have either an expired passport or a certified birth certificate and government issued photo ID like a license or you will get a big hassle when going by land. Rush passports take almost a month right now in USA and regular are nearly two months. Another option is to get to the US border city, cross if convenient, and then take a flight from the Mexican border city to your destination. Mexicana and Aeromexico are pretty reasonable. Finally, if you have a passport somewhere but can't find it, and can get into Mexico (ie, one way flight since Mexico doesn't require the passport), just go to the nearest consulate Citizen Services and tell them you can't find your passport and need to get home. Be sure to have a certified birth certificate (not a photocopy) and government issued photo ID like a driver license, and they will make you a new passport the same day or next day and the cost won't be as much as the expedited one in the US and about the same as paying the US Post office commission. But remember that'not what the system was designed for, it was meant for people who really lose their passport. Once you get the passport, you could take a Mexican flight back to the US. Expensiver I know not to get the round trip, but I don't know your situation.
Hope that helps. |

I have my vacation booked in Los Cabos for the end of this month. I do NOT have a passport. I just need my birth certificate, and another piece of photo identification - government issued. I have a drivers license and work ID (I work in gov services)
I am Canadian and flying there from Canada. Mexico is one of 5 destinations that I could pick from because it was a last minute thing and I didn't have a passport yet. |

Yes you do need your passport right now, however there is a way around it if you are set on going.
I flew to the US last weekend, and because I dont have a valid passport I could not fly from Mexico to the US, you can however fly within Mexico without a passport and within the US. So I simply took a flight from GDL to TJ, took a trolly across the border to San Deigo for about $15 USD and then took another US flight to where I was going in the states.
My local travel agency booked everything for me, which made it very easy because they were able to work my flights around border crossing and all that with no wait at all.
Remember when you travel you do need you photo ID and original birth certificate (must have the raised seal) you will also need to get a tourist card at the border if you are going to be there more than 72 hours or you plan to leave the border zones.
Best of luck, feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do. |
