1. Only if you drive carelessly and break a traffic law. Don't pay bribes. Call their bluff and go to the station.
2. True, but don't let that stop you. Drive defensively and remember the topes that can wipe out your front end and also that ALTO means stop to you but not to anyone else. Watch the intersections carefully.
3. I've driven to MX over a 100 times and never had a problem.
4. Yes, definitely get car insurance for Mexico.
5. Take the TOLL ROADS when ever you can.
6. Be sure they set the pumps back to zero before pumping the gas. otherwise, you'll end up paying for your gas and their last customers gas.
7. Don't drive at night.
8. When you plan on getting drunk, stay at the hotel and take a cab. Don't drive drunk.
9. I like margaritas , pina coladas and rum and coke. Try a greyhound. That's grapefruit juice and vodka. It's addictive. Try at least once, a tequila and coke. Or a shot of tequila.
10. Ask the bell hop if he knows a good cabbie to recommend. A good cabbie can take you right to the night spots for all those pretty senoritas. Pay him by the hour and have him join you in the club. He can translate for you and watch your back. Tip him good, too. He'll also make sure you get the right change. And it's a lot safer driving back to the hotel with him driving.
11. Don't be an Ugly American! Be courteous, respectful, have manners. Try to learn some basic Spanish in the time you have. |

1. I've been to Mexico many times and driven through 18 of the 31 states and I've never been stopped. Of course, I've always flown in and rented a car, so I've always had vehicles with Mexican plates.
2. Traffic is the craziest in the biggest cities (Mexico City is impossible), but Tampico shouldn't be a problem.
3. Twenty trips to Mexico and I've never been robbed. But I've always worn a money belt under my clothes to hold my passport, tourist card, ATM card a credit card and 90 percent of the money.
4. Yes. Your stateside insurance doesn't cover you in Mexico. You can buy insurance at the Sanborn's in Brownsville or you can order it online for the days you're going to be there--click the second link.
5. Ask the bartender what's the best drink he makes. |

You will need a car permit and the ins. See 1st site below. Traffic is challenging...just be careful as you can be. You are not going to be stopped just because you have American plates. If you happen to be stopped, be very courteous. Carry a modest sum of money in your wallet, the rest in a money belt or other locations..just to be wise...no matter where you are. I am a single American woman living and driving in Mexico and I have been stopped by a policeman for not having my seat belt on or making what he said was an improper turn...courtesy and pleading ignorance worked fine. Do not hang out in bars or get drunk and make yourself a target. In other words, use common sense, just like at home. |

The traffic is definitly insane! In bigger citys they do have lights so it is a little better than a town. Basically you just have to go when you get a chance to. They will usually stop and watch walking traffic to which is also heavy and they usually walk in front of you too.
I heard that about the cops to but i had no problems. Everything and everyone was nice. If you know the language it will make is easier on you.
Do keep a good eye on your stuff. Robbing can really happen anywhere so don't make yourself the target. |

I'm not from Mexico but I'm Hispanic so ...
1. It's not for sure they are going to pull you over and if they do just give them $5.00 and they will let you go.
2. The traffic IS insane and a lot of people don't follow the rules (now remember i said a lot not ALL) but you will make it don't worry.
3. Most likely since you are a American and they might think you have a lot of money so i would recommend you not to be alone.
4. i don't thiink so. I've never heard of something like that.
My advice is, if you are going to stay in a resort you might want to stay inside that resort and if you are going out the resort don't be alone. I'm not saying Mexico is a horrible place i think is beautiful but you have to be careful. |
