In Cancun, you can take a day trip and see the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza (they're cool); you can go to Xcaret and float down and underground river or you can go to Xel-ha and snorkle. But Cancun is so Americanized, it's almost like going to Miami. Cancun is pretty expensive, but if you go south from there, it starts getting cheaper. Cancun is very touristy and easy to travel to. Everyone speaks English, and everyone accepts, or even prefers, US money. And it is normally cheaper than any other location in Mexico. It would be very good for a first time traveler.
