Mexico ..a few questions? |
My teenage daughter(16) is going to Cuernavaca for several weeks to study spanish. Do you think she will have fun?I am very worried about her because she is not very outgoing. Do you think this experience will help get her out of her shell a little? Tell me anything about Cuernavaca that you know! Also, what kind of clothes should she pack..and what kind of clothes should she wear? Mostly she wears tank tops and jeans or sweat pants when shes here in the states. |

Cuernavaca is beautiful! I lived there for a month last summer. It is a fairly safe city. Normal summer clothing should be just fine. She should also bring a light spring-ish jacket. It stays around 70 degrees in Cuernavaca all the time. There is a lot to do there! She'll have an amazing time!
P.S. If she is going to a school (i.e. Universidad Internacional), she will have a wonderful experience becoming more outgoing. Language schools like that, and the families that the kids stay with, do a very good job of bringing shy type kids out of their shells!

The answer by thomas j is the classic paranoid answer of an ignorant person who has never travel in his life. |

A good idea. I haven't been to Cuernvaca for many years but as I remember it was very beautiful and the people were nice and outgoing. You might want to get her some tank tops that are more modest, it would be better for her on the street and for international relations. Our young girls' reputation on the world stage isn't very good. This trip for her will be a great experience in her young life, Mexico is a highly civilized country with a well developed culture over hundreds of years.Bien viaje. |

As the parent of 2 teens, let me suggest something she should take for YOUR peace of mind. Have her take a prepaid cell phone. (PRE-PAID only - so there's no surprises that show up in your cell phone bill.)
They're not that expensive anymore (if you shop right) and they work REALLY well (if you get one that works with Telcel which is like the AT&T of cell phones in Mexico).
On my last trip I used cellular VOIP provided by Mexitel to call home and the price was >>pennies<< per minute added onto the normal cell phone charge (which was something like 30 cents per minute), so there's no reason not to keep that link there if she needs it (not to mention that you can also call and be sure of reaching her as well!) |

Well don't worry, she'll be fine in the school she will be able (or required) to get to know some people, english class students perhaps so she doesn't have to be that outgoing to meet someone. Yeah in that kind of trips fun it's a sure thing maybe her trip mates will organize something and so does the school, she should be fine about that. she should pack those jeans and top tanks, maybe some skirts or shorts beacuse during the day it could be over 90 °F, and some sweaters not to much just a few, and it'll be raining, so also pack something for the mosquitos as a tropical place mosquitos during rain season are common. Good Luck with that trip. If you (or her =P)have any common question or something shoot me a message i'm from Mexico and hopefully i can help. bye |

I think it will be a very interesting and educational experience for her. I had a friend who went to Cuernavaca to learn Spanish, she stayed with a family and she really liked it. I think the best way to learn a language is to go to the Country where that language is spoken, if she is surrounded by that language it will be easier for her to pick it up. Mexican people are very friendly and hospitable so she should make friends easy. Cuernavaca is known as the city of "Eternal Spring", meaning the weather is always nice. I wish her the best, she should be well. |

I am Mexican and lived in Cuernavaca 8 years, I was there last month with my husband (German citizen).
The weather is great, the people are super nice and funny, the city is beautiful.
About dangers, it is like all the cities, there are times and areas where it is not recomended to go (normally the slams where poor people live, in all Mexican cities there are areas where live rich people, middle class and poor people). But I don´t think, that she would prefer to visit that areas instead to stay in the nice zones. But if she will stay with a family, they will teach her the good zones to go.
When I was there, we met a US man, who were assaulted, but he was with a gril who he met in a bar, she took him to a unsave place and she help to left him without papers and money...
Like you see, she will be as save as in any place in USA, where she doesn´t know the area. What you heard about the police, it is true, if you do something false and you want to avoid problems, just pay them, a bad situation, but if you don´t put yourself in legal problems, then, there is not a big deal.
Cuernavaca was famous too, because many important people were kidnaped there, but it is only, by the famous wealthy families, tourists are not objective. |

oh no.
I have family in Mexico and when we drove down there to visit them (they live in a town below Mexico City) and we had to pass this city call Cuernavaca. and they told us, whatever you do, "DON'T STOP for anything in Cuernavaca," there are corrupt police and thieves, and murders. And when it came to that, i was really scared when we were passing, also because it was my first time in Mexico. But a lot of my family and other people say "try getting gas and go to the bathroom before Cuernavaca, just don't stop there for any reason."
sorry, if this not what you wanted to hear, but i am making sure you do hear this and really know what you are getting you daughter into. It probably is safe where your daughter will study but I don't know, from what people told me. |

*Vj ..... !!!☺

*i think the experience of being on her own
will surely make her a bit outgoing !!!!
