ACAPULCO! If you're looking for fun, go to Acapulco. If you're looking for culture, go to Mexico City. As a single black man in Acapulco though, be prepared to fend off all the table-dance hawkers that'll approach you. It seems everyone is an agent for one place or another, including taxi drivers, bellboys, and waiters. While in Acapulco, be sure to check out Puerto Marques and Pie de la Cuesta too. If you really want to see Mexico City, make it a side trip out of Acapulco. Though like gamerunner2001 says, you might better enjoy a side trip to Zihua/Ixtapa instead. It's closer than Mexico City. |

Those are very different vacations!
Acapulco is 90% beach and bars, Mexico City (or DF to the locals) has 1,000 years of history and culture.
In Acapulco, you can do everything in a week or two. In DF, you can easily spend 1-6 months seeing the sights.
Both cities are safe if you stay to the tourist areas. If you like to get off the beaten trail, you are more likely to be robbed in DF.
From mid-June to about Oct, DF is cold and rainy. Aca can be sunny, hot and muggy or in the middle of a hurricane.
If you have two weeks, see both! It's about a five-hour, comfortable bus ride and a nice little adventure. |

Well, for me the beach is why I return to Mexico each year and with two coasts and thousands of miles of potential new adventures I doubt I'll make it to Mexico city anytime soon. I like Acapulco, has lots of action on and off the beach, not far down the coast from Ixatapa/Zihuatanejo. My vote is Acapulco. |

Mexico City, of course. Except for the horible polution, one of the great cities of the world.
Acapulco is all right if you like beach cities. |

Well, Mexico City is very dangerous and if you don't anyone it gets scary. My dad lives there and I 'm afraid to go to many areas. The adult life gets pretty crazy and is just a lot of fun, but could get yourself in danger if you don't know where you are going and at what time of the day. Just be careful. I would rather go to Acapulco is nice, is the beach and there will be more tourist so it would be easier to blend in and have fun without the danger |

I say go to both. They are reasonably close in distance. But if you must choose one, I say Acapulco-- it is more understated and far more safe than Mexico City. You may not have the fantastic views of the pyramids, but you can see the cliff divers and the beautiful sapphire sea.
Happy trails! :) |
