It's different for everybody. If you move to an area like Lake Chapala where there are lots of gringos ... you may never learn Spanish |

My Spanish language skills are rudimentary, here in Baja California many gringos speak Spanglish. Lived in Mexico on and off for 25 years. |

Hi. I have lived here in Toluca, Mexico for 4 years. I have never taken Spanish classes. My level is 95% understanding of spoken/written Spanish, and my speaking level is around 70% fluency. The most difficult part about Spanish is verb conjugation. I would suggest buying a book or two. I recently bought "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Spanish Verbs" It's a well organized easy to read book. I haven't yet cracked the cover though. Buy such a book before you move here and a good Spanish/English dictionary. Here's how it went for me.
First 3 months.......almost zero understanding
Second 3 months....I could understand some things and the "thinking in Spanish" started setting in.
Second six months.....major improvement, 40% level
It goes on like that......If i wasn't too lazy/busy to open a book, it would have gone faster. There are other things to consider. Learning Spanish here in Mexico, you'll have a great natural accent. People often ask me if I'm from here when I speak. Contact me if you like.....I'm Rob |

i did...but here is the catch. a LOT of people will want to use you to practice their english...and if you let them do it all the time, you WON'T speak spanish. that doesn't mean you won't learn it, but you won't be able to speak it with ease.
linguistically, it takes between 2 and 3 years to speak a language conversationally, and 5 to 7 years to become academically fluent in that langauage. it took me about a year to really feel comfortable, and not be afraid to go places on my own...and that was from ZERO spanish. but i hardly spoke it fluently. don't believe people who say you'll go and be fluent in six months...that will NOT happen...unless you have genius capabilities.
language was the least of my struggles. i knew enough people who spoke english to make friends and get work done....but the culture shock was the biggest deal. i had a migraine for the first 3 weeks...seriously. it was an unbelievable amount of stress on my mind and body. but a very rewarding experience in the end. i would never do it differently.
oh yeah!! i would very much recommend spanish classes. this whole "learn it by ear" thing is fine for some people....but for me, i had to know WHY. it helped me learn faster...to make sense out of things, when i knew the structures. for example.... hablar is "to speak" rather than learning the words hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, etc.... i just learned the endings, and then the one word "hablar." then later when i learned "estudiar" i knew how to form the verbs because i'd already learned the endings, rather they seeing each verb form as a seperate word. seeing it in this mathematical way was very helpful for me. |

I moved to Mexico from Toronto Canada almost 5 years ago.
I only spoke English when I moved here now my Spanish is 70% spoken 20% written, not as good as some others here, but that's not bad for an old dog. |

It could be easy or not, if you're trying to writte a book it'll take you quite a long time but if you live into a Spanish speaking language country you'll be able to handle it fast, just 6 months can show you everything you should know to improve your skills, at least for all the basics. |
