Drug people are fighting each other for control over the areas that are easy to cross over into the USA. They are killing many people and also some of the police. Anyone that tries to get in their way. How sad because I would love to be able to go there but I'm to afraid. How sad for the good Mexican people that live there. I had always wanted to go see their beautiful country.

As others have stated, the drug cartels are in control of much of the government, or whats left of it in Mexico. The violence will predominantly focus around the border towns. However, there have been recent murders/kidnappings in Cancun.

As far as being too dangerous to visit, I dont think so. In Cancun, as long as you stay in the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone), you shouldnt have any problems. Many people like to visit Market 28 to find bargain deals on junk (souveniers) and this I would strongly discourage. The market is well outside of the Hotel Zone and you get a real feel for the REAL MEXICO. You can shop in the Hotel Zone at the Flamingo Mall and get the same so-called "bargains" on the typical tourist crap.

Staying in the Hotel Zone is the best bet, plus all the fun stuff to do in Cancun is located here anyway. Travel in groups, and if you have to get trashed, do so at the resort.

police/government are corrupted.

theres a huge drug problem there.
random killings

Do a little looking into the place you want to go. St Louis Missouri has the highest murder rate in the country, but I feel pretty safe in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Mexico is a big country too. Some places will be safer then others.

You don't honestly believe what Bill Maher says, he's a comedian? That is like getting science reports on global themaldynamics from a politician like Al Gore, who is selling carbon credits. I visit Saltillo and Monterrey Mexico, on business at least once a month and stay a week at a time. This area is approximately 250 miles south of the border. I have never had a security problem, the hotels have security people inside and outside the hotel 24 hours a day. The violence is reported to be getting worse and this trip (yesterday 2/27) I saw military vehicles with machine guns mounted on Hummers and Coahilla state police all over the roadside. I feel safe because these areas are highly industrialized with large multinational corporations and the Mexican government knows if there are safety concerns with corporate employees, they will lose business, taxes and more importantly jobs for the Mexican people.

yes its very dangerous right now, there have been ALOT of murders and rapes like 10 times the normal amount, and they say alot of people have been kidnapped

Draw a line from La Paz east through Mazatlan and the rest of MX and you'll find it's a lot safer than north of that line.
Acapulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo, La Paz, etc have always been safe for us...and we usually drive to those places.
Use common sense and cautions you would traveling any place.

Depends on where you want to go. Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Baja you're fine. Just stay away from tijuana and any of the other border towns; there war zones plagued by crime, theft, murder, prostitution, drugs, rape, corrupt cops who even rob Americans -- basically its hell on earth.

I went there in April last year to Mexico City and didn't hae any problems at all. The pyramids and all the sites in around the city were easy to get to and beautiful.... although i wouldn't go up north because of all the drug problems there
