No, get drinks and ice made from purified water. Some of the more expensive resorts have a water purification system built into the water system.
Ask for "agua purificada" for your drinks.
The water is safe for bathing, but for toothbrushing, use bottled water. Normally the resort will supply you with a bottle or two every day.
If you are washing fruits/vegetables, there are drops you can buy for this purpose to put in the water. If you are cooking, once the water boils for 10 minutes, all of the dangerous bacteria have been killed.
If you do get "mal de turista", Pepto-Bismol is readily available in Mexico. |

I was in Cancun for spring break, and while you don't want to drink the water from the tap, or even brush your teeth with it(use bottled water) the resorts have very clean water for drinking and serving food and beverages. If you are out and about and visit a "local" establishment it may be risky. You could always ask and just basically use common sense. Have a great time beautiful beaches! |

You will need a bottle of water just to carry water. I have never had a problem there or any other place in Mexico, I do go sick when I was in Louisiana and Vancouver last year. Dont be affraid. as someone sayed Pepto is a good friend. LOL |

amy 27's relatives got sick probably because they abused booze
you should not drink watter if is not bottled in any country in this world, EVEN IN THE USA. cause water pipes are old most of the times and watter will be contaminated anyway |

The problem is not the water. The problem is the hot sauce you end up eating at taco stands and at restaurants. The problem is that with the heat the bacteria found in them is much more harmful. Believe me there is no problem with the water I have lived on and off in Mexico since 1987 and have had no problem but if you want to play it safe you can drink bottled water. There are a lot of brands of drinking water but the best are "CIEL" from Coca-Cola bottling and "Bonafont" made by "Dannon" company. |

If you stay at a nice resort, the ice cubes are filtered water allegedly. I have never gotten sick drinking the water there, even when tap water in a small village out in the country side. |

the whole thing about don't drink the water is not true. that is only if you go to south border of mexico and Guatemala. where conditions there are every poor.
most of mexico villages drink rain water and they boil it, after drinking it. every few can't afford water that is broughten to there villages.
cancun is a tourist place and they sell bottle water there (and also all over mexico) for 10 pesos ($1) or less. you don't have much to worry about, because it is a tourist place they tend to charge more. |

Personally, I'd avoid anything with ice- stick to beer or bottled beverages.
Most people forget to use bottled water while brushing their teeth- so remember that one.
Also, just remember that EVERY food and drink , in EVERY country has some bacteria- every time I come home from extended trips in Mexico I get sick.
Just be careful, but remember to HAVE FUN- ENJOY...wish I could go to Cancun... |

I've never been there and never had a problem.
:)
However, I did have a good friend who went to Belize several years ago and did catch some pretty nasty parasite, Of course after a round of antibiotics he was fine, but it ruined a couple days of his trip. He tells me he didn't drink any "water" but did have some mixed drinks. Who knows, he may have picked it up from some place other than the water.
Obviously you can't base you decision to have mixed drinks at a resort on this. I would think you'd hear about this more often if it were likely to happen. |

I think it's best to avoid it. My dad got sick while in Mexico because he drank too many mixed drinks and my brother in law got sick, also from mixed drinks while on honeymoon....or maybe from some bad fish (they weren't sure what caused it). |
