Move to Mexico?

I want to move to Mexico. My husband and I both speak fluent Spanish. We also have a 3 year old. We have relatives that live in Diaz Ordaz near Reynosa but of course that is VERY close to the border and they tell us things are getting ugly there, pretty much anywhere along the border is pretty dangerous. I want to live somewhere that is not too populated, a small town. Can anyone recommend a few places?

I have lived in Guadalajara for three years now. I love it, but I have Dollar-based income from businesses in the US. I like the big city so GDL is for me. There are several smaller towns on the outskirts of GDL like Chapala and Ajijic. If you want something closer to the border, look at the suberbs of Monterrey, which is just 3 hours or so south of the US border through Laredo, TX. Rent should run you about $500-700 a month in a nice area and plan on private school for your child. My US-born son is 7 and he goes to Montessori school at about $300 a month. Utilities and phone should be all together about $100 a month. Food is cheap. Gas is not. I have heard great things about San Miguel de Allende, Aguascalientes, and Puebla. Check out the Mexico section of Internationalliving.com. Hope this helps. Buena Suerte!

I am an American, retired, living in mexico. For a young couple to live in Mexico is entirely different to reliring in mexico. You need to make a decent living...and that is VERY difficult here. In a small town, job opportunities will be nearly nil. Even in a large city, a very good high tech job pays very little compared to the U.S. Schools in small towns are often very poor...definetly not up to U.S. standards. The people are wonderful, it is safe ( I live in the state of Veracruz), but your standard of living would be much lower than in the U.S. Maybe a long visit would be wise.

San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful town full of history. A place that must be visited by anyone that comes to Mexico.

Generally, small towns have problems at distributing water and those basic services, also jobs doesn't abound. A nice and small city is Guanajuato, it has nice weather, however many of immigrants move from there...may be there isn't a lot of jobs to get...
If you're thinking in beach, Cancun would be good, I see it like the safest and cleanest coast city, but it is also quite expensive.
There are other cities in desert like Torreon or in the mountains like Monterrey.
I won't advice you to move to central and/or southern Mexico, there are too much problems about security, for example.
I recommend you to move with a job already gotten or with enough money for some time.
Finaly, it depends what weather and landscapes you would like to live in and see.
Hope this help

There are lots of small towns that are good for living in Mexico. I recommend anyone that is in the state of Jalisco...because I am originally from there and love it. If you have plenty of money saved up, anywhere you go will be fine.

Mexico is huge. You want the beach, the desert, tropics or the mountains. Climates are very different

Then how do you make in living where ever you are ... not easy. Maybe gather the family together and make a family business. I suggest you take a few vacations and start looking. Whatever, don't try it without money or your plan is doomed.

Veracruz was a nice area. So was Tampico. They are about 9-10 hours from the border though. I enjoyed Matamoros quite a bit right across the border from Brownsville.

You won't like it. No matter how much it may seem romantic, it is not.
