You got so many negative and ill-informed answers! There are many Americans, Canadians and Europeans living in Mexico happily and safely. I am an American woman living very happily and safely in Mexico. I know many American women married to Mexican men living here. To live here legally, you need to get either an FM3 or an FM2 visa...since your husband is Mexican, you are allowed to skip the FM 3 visa and get an FM2 if you desire. There are income requirements. Your visa needs to be renewed every year for several years, until you are eligible to apply for citizenship. You may enter Mexico with a 6 month tourist visa, then go to the nearest INM office to apply for your visa. You will not be able to work in Mexico with out a work permit and they are very difficult to get...some of the American wives I know are artists or writers, or had enough money to start a business. If you ever have a child born here, be Absolutely sure that you register the birth at the American Embassy to insure that the child also has American citizenship. Be sure you have an American passport before you come...must have it to get visa. See sites below for additional info. I recommend that you also visit the nearest Mexican consulate for more info...there is a list below.

Don't listen to all of these people. EVERY country in the entire universe has crime, pollution and other crap that happens. Mexico is no different, but like any place, there are nicer, better cities within each state in Mexico. Most of what you hear about Mexico is true, but most of what you hear about other countries is true as well. Yes, it will be completely different then what you are used to as an American, but life is short. Do what you want and if you don't like it, its not like you can't come back. BTW, I'd google residency laws in Mexico to see if you can be considered a resident by virture of being married to a Mexican national.

Your posting and your desires are alot like mine. I love change ! Change you will find here- some good, some bad. The poverty , lack of education , trash ,crime are some.
Every single thing in your life will change - laundry , food , shopping.
Still want to come down - great ! Be open minded and also able to brush things off - Like many of what people wrote here.
I see the corrupt Govt. ways every day and I hate it. I see poverty everyday and hate it. I brush it off - its not my country and Im just here for the weather and learning.
Yes crime is worse here - probably alot like New York city or any other big city. Just learn where to go and keep your 5th sense alert and you will be fine. Dont be stupid and wear flashy jewlery and youll be fine. Watch what sections of your town to avoid and youll be fine.

Jobs are really non exsistant. Very ,very hard to get one. Pay will be about 5 us dollars a day. But the cost of living is also alot cheaper.

I came down not knowing "fluent" spanish and wish I had as that makes day to day living and having fun easier. I still do both and am learning, but I should have done it.

Id suggest you come down to a city you might consider moving to and spend some time . 2 weeks will give you an idea. Please look at it from a resident point of view and leave a tourist mentality at home. Its easy to spend 2 weeks here with a "tourist' mindset and then make the move and see the REAL Mexico.

Honestly , its not for everybody . It's not. But I see a little something in you that maybe you can do it and enjoy it. I pesonally found the drastic change to just be exhillerating ! I got bored with the go, go, go lifestyle and chasing the $$$ and traffic and TV and I got bored with life. As soon as I landed I just felt exhilerated at life again. Everyday something new and different - some good , some bad but different and that just put life back ito perspective for me. I think people who do this type of thing are far more intelligent and well rounded. they can look at life from many different points of view and UNDERSTAND life and the world better.

Good luck - but come down and check it out before you leap.

Ok.... I've always wanted to live there too so I did some research and this is what I know:

1) You have to get something called an FM3 Visa, which is pretty much like a working visa. It must be renewed yearly. The easiest way to get that is through an employer. In order to be employed you have to prove that you can do a job that no other Mexican can do. Easiest things: tourism or teaching english.

2) After a certain amount of time ( I think 3 years, not sure) you have to apply for a residency visa. Once you've had that for a certain amount of time (again, not sure how long) you apply for citizenship.

It's not really as simple as "I married a Mexican, I'm Mexican now" but marrying one sure makes it easier.

Good luck to you! Hopefully you learn some spanish and have a really great time!!!

Great!! mexico is a very bueatiful country!! i'am from there!!

people there don't like racism!!! they will treat you very good!!

it would be easy for you to live because your husband is a citizen and you can be too!!

it is like here if you marry a us citizen then you get papers!!

hoo!! and there's no bad think to hate about hispanic people because we rocks!! as everybody!!

Hi!!!First of all...ARE YOU CRAZY??? Do you speak Spanish??? if you go there, were are you going to work?? they don't hire people if they are over 35 years old, if you want to work in a office you need to be between 18 and 25 years old , be beautiful and have a beautiful body, they dint care how smart you are, they prefer how you look, sad but it is the true. I am Mexican and I am 36 and I will NEVER move back!!! thank god I am US citizen Girl Think Twice and be wise. as for vacation great but just think... Why everybody want to come to USA, the economy in Mexico is terrible!!! best of luck.

well, i'm dating a mexican at the moment and from what she tells me it is VERY difficult to find work once you hit middle age, pay is poor even with cheeper cost of living, you may want to have your husband teach you mexican dialect of spanish, theyre hard to understand if you are used to spanish accents. try to seccure a job before going there, perhaps somewhere where a farmiliar american accent would help(tourisim industry for exsample)
as far a getting papers you are automatically a citizen since you married a mexican. although, corruption from drug cartels means they have lax immigration laws anyway. but you just need to get papers.
as far as lifestyle i suggest you get a car right away, as an american girl you really cannot walk anywhere, its not safe, unless you live in the countryside in which case it's too far to walk anyway. and keep your american papers(passport, birth cert etc) in the bank(trust me)

Mexico is not how it used to be. My buddies dad moved there for work a while back when it was good, but moved back now that it has gone down the tubes.
There are a lot of people being killed in Mexico on their vacations, you should do your research before going.
