Hola. I'll put it in a way you can understand. When you are home in the USA do you worry about the Italian Mafia or the Hells Angels? No? Well then you have nothing to worry about in Mexico.
Yes, there have been crimes against tourists down here for many years....the most recent was a canadian man shot dead in his hotel room here in Cabo. But if you were to open any newspaper in the USA you will see that there is more violence against Americans right on their own doorstep! I'd be scared to live there! |

I think Mom is watching too much TV. The Mexican drug cartels are way too busy protecting territory and prodcut to fuss with a family of tourists. Go, have a good time...Mexico is a grand place to visit. |

I been to Mexico like 24 times and it's a really cool and safe place. I've been to 18 of their 31 states and never had a problem.
If you stay away from the border states, you're safer in Mexico than you would be in Washington DC. |

Where did your mom get her information?
Mexico's got its share of problems but CanCun being a tourist resort is very safe (as is the rest of the country most of the time) |

I don't know exactly how things are over there now, since I moved to Canada a year ago (I lived in Cancun), but when I was there, there were no problems between Mexican mafia and U.S. tourists.
There could be problems with certain U.S. tourists, probably because they were already involved in some sort of "mafia business" before going on vacation. Nothing to do with random tourists being targeted by the mafia.
It very much depends where you are and who you're with, like everywhere else you go on vacation. If you're in a deserted place at 2am, you're looking for trouble, tourist or not.
Hope it helps. I really think you shouldn't worry about that. |

I was just in Cancun last week and I didn't notice any "Mexican Mafia" around at all. Most places seemed quite safe. Obviously, like with any place you visit don't go into sketchy areas at night where you don't see any other foreigners. There was no point during my week long stay there that I did not feel safe and we roamed around at night quite a bit. |

i was just down in the Playa Del Carmen area and i havent felt safer. I actually am looking to buy a place in that area. Beautiful woman. Better looking than American girls in my opinion. Very nice people I think the US government tries to give Mexico a bad name |

Greetings from Cancun!
I am an American living in Cancun and I feel safer here than I have in many American cities I have lived in. Are there "bad" parts of town...yes...as in any city...and it isn't a place that you can easily get to. I don't know where you live but I am sure it has it's share of violence!
Cancun has over 10,000 expats (non-Mexican) living here year around, many retired. Why? Because the weather is wonderful, people friendly and well...it is a safe place to be.
There are parts of Mexico that are having "war" with each other mostly to do with drugs. These are not tourist towns so foreigners are usually not involved.
If your Mom would like to contact me with specific questions I will be happy to talk with her via "answers email".
Hope this helps! |

Please no need to worry about this, if your staying in the hotel zone it's very safe. Just use common and you'll have fun!! |

never heard of the Mexican mafia...
there's a lot of Americans in Cancun, just be careful...
it's like any other place....
did you heard about Dana...
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/293657/last_seen_in_mexico/
she disappeared in Cancun or tulum and people believe that she was abducted by an American....
so it doesn't have to be the Mexican mafia....
my advice just be careful, don't trust anyone...
I been to Cancun like 10 times and it's a really cool and safe place. |

Only thing I've heard is that there has been an increase in the number of foreigners that have been attacked and also that have been arrested on very flimsy evidence or no direct evidence. Mexico is becoming a place where foreigners are becoming targets as they are seen as rich and so more kidnappings, robberies, killings and so on. Basically it is a visitor beware of your surroundings and don't go anywhere alone and becareful of who you talk to. At many clubs it is a game in some places for a girl to be friendly and when leaving her boy friend and his buddies rob you and beat you. |

It is getting dangerous down there. Some of the police kidnap foreigners for ransom. |
