Cancun. Playa del Carmen is closer to it. Cozumel is nicer but you will need to take the boat (20 minutes) to cross to playa del Carmen. And I am sure that plain tickets to Cancun are cheaper. |

CANCUN!
While Cozumel is much closer physically to Playa del Carmen than Cancun, just right across the straight, it is a 1/2 hour ferry ride. Also you will have to change planes in Cancun anyway and Playa del Carmen is only a 20 minute taxi run from the airport. You will be there by taxi from the Cancun airport before your connecting flight (to Cozumel) even takes off from Cancun......

Go to whatever is cheaper.
From Cancun it's less than an hour bus or taxi ride.
Cozumel, once your there, you have to board the feery to the mainland.
To me it's about the same time.
Playa del Carmen is nice, wish I was going back now. |

Hi, basically it is the same, except if you fly to cozumel you (as you read) will need to take a cab and the ferry (one each hour) and then another cab from the dock in playa to your hotel.
If you arrive to cancún you only take one cab.
The price would be more or less the same, in total.
So either choose the cheaper flight or... if instead of suitcases you travel with backpacks, choose cozumel, that way you can walk in el malecón, or see the stores, etc.
if you take the ferry, remember to choose the seats outside away from the engine fumes!!! inside you will get sea sick (unless you have sea legs).
