I'm doing my research about retiring to Mexico. I haven't settled on one place yet, but I like these areas:
Lake Chapala
San Miguel de Allende
Guadelejara
Guanajuato
Oaxaca
San Cristobal de las Casas
I've been to Oaxaca and San Cristobal de las Casas a few times and love the area, but I don't know if they would be good retirerment areas.
I've been to Guadelejara and I like it, but it's getting more polluted each year.
I haven't been to Lake Chapala or San Miguel de Allende, but I read books about those areas, and they are attractive. But they are more expensive than other areas because of so many North Americans living there.
Currently, I'm reading The Plain Truth about Living in Mexico: The Expatriate's Guide to Moving, Retiring, or just hanging out by Doug and Cindi Bower. They live in Guanajuato and make it sound nice.
Oaxaca would probably be pretty inexpensive, but your Spanish will probably have to be pretty good.
The Webboard at http://chapala.com/ is a good place ask questions about expatriot issues.
Before you make your move, you should probably cross the border on a FM-T (tourist) visa, this will give you 180 days to explore the area and see it you really like it. |

My friends were just robbed outside Oaxaca, its a terrible thing because the city and environs have so much to offer. Check other places where it is safer. |

There have been a lot of problems.. kidnappings and murders when drug deals went bad... If I was going to move to Mexico, it wouldn't be Oaxaca... Guadalajara, maybe or San Miguel de Allende certainly, but not in the drug corridor south of D.F. |

I think you must be crazy to move there, unless you are from there.
I'm mexican, trust me.
If you are thinking on moving to anywhere in Mexico, keep away from Oaxaca or Guerrero states.
There are wonderful places to live in México, Oaxaca is NOT one of them; that state s wonderful to visit as tourist, but not to live. You should think in states like Guanajuato (San Miguel de Allende city has many retired americans, and also other citys), Querétaro, Sonora (Puerto Peñasco, called by americans Rocky Point, is a good place, I heard), Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta and Chapala are the prefered by amercians) Yucatán, Aguascalientes, Nuevo León, Veracruz.
The rest are fine, but those are the more popular for american people. |
