My live in boyfriend has planned a trip to Cancun, Mexico. Is there any way to get a refund from priceline? |
I am really nervous because my boyfriend is taking a vacation to Mexico with one of his friends. He planned this trip before the Swine Flu outbreak. Priceline says that it won't give him a refund but I still don't want him to go at all. I don't want him or his friend to get sick and I don't want to get sick when he gets back (I don't have health insurance). I'm worried that they'll get quarantined in Mexico. I also think its really irresponsible of them to go because they could possibly bring this flu to our area. But my boyfriend refuses to listen to me because he already paid for it and he's not going to lose all that money that he worked for to go on this trip. Priceline obviously doesn't care about its customers or the health of our nation or else it would refund trips to Mexico at this time. I just feel like circumstances like this would cause Priceline to make exceptions for its no refund policy. Does anybody know a loop hole that could make Priceline refund his money for this trip? Additional Details Obviously he cares about his money more than his health, which I think is really stupid (as you can probably tell). Its more of me being scared to get this thing or bringing it back here. If you've seen the news, you'd know that some of the first cases in the U.S. were from students in New York going to Cancun for spring break, which is why I became concerned in the first place. Trust me, if I could go to my parents I would but unfortunately they don't live in the same state as me. The only way to get him not to go is if I can figure out a way to get a refund of his money, which is why I asked if any one knew a loop hole, but obviously you guys don't so why do you bother to answer? |

Please be assured that there is no reason to cancel. There are n new cases, the cases there have been were almost all in Mexico City, almost all from one school...and even the WHO has said today it is already fading away. The flu is far weaker than they thought at first, and the hype has been way out of proportion. There are no problems in Cancun...you have a greater chance of getting sick with something else at home than of getting the flu here. There simply is no flu in Cancun or the entire peninsula or any of the nearby states. The students who were in Cancun and got the flu surely wee in contact with someone from Mexico City...but there has been no spread of flu in Cancun. Please do not continue to worry about this. |

You are being silly.
There have been no cases of the virus in Cancun. The bulk of Cancun is not really Mexico anyway... it is a created, all-inclusive resort area mostly populated by non-Mexicans.
Mexico is taking severe steps to combat the virus, and the numbers of infections in Mexico is dropping. There are now more new cases outside of Mexico than inside Mexico.
There are no quarantines or travel restrictions.
Why are you looking for "loopholes?" Don't you believe in honoring your obligations? When you make a deal, don't you think you are obligated to follow through? Why should Priceline go to the trouble of making your boyfriend's arrangements and then let a nagging girlfriend interfere... thus making all their work be for nothing?
If people are that concerned, they should buy travel insurance.
All your boyfriend has to do is ask his doctor for Tamaflu or some other inoculation. If you are concerned, you should get some for yourself. If you don't have any money or insurance, contact the Public Health Department.
But the bottom line is that you are over-reacting. They have a "flu" season every year. About 40,000 people die of the flu or flu-related illnesses every year in the United States. Get a grip. |

Your BF STILL WANTS TO COME, regardless of the no-refund thing. If he was really paranoid or worried about his health, yours or the entire nation's, he wouldn't mind about the money and would cancel. But since there is NO REASON to cancel (no suspension of the trips between Mexico-USA, no prohibition from the WHO) then the company has no obligation to cancel & refund the money. It's their prerrogative. So stop whining and let your BF make HIS decision, and if you're sooooo worried go spend a month at your parents' place and that way he won't get you sick.
Geeez. I don't know why people think they will get sick the moment they land in Mexico and start breathing the air here....... NOT. Inform yourself a bit better, girl.
EDIT: Well you're asking for something that does not exist, so maybe that's why you're not getting the response you want to get. If you don't like what other people think about your question then DON'T POST A QUESTION in the first place. You're going to get all kinds of responses and most of them won't be of your liking --- awww that's just too bad, live with it. We're not being cruel, just realistic. Do you REALLY know how many people have died in Mexico of this disease in the last 2 weeks or so?? FIFTEEN. I bet there have been more people dead in car crashes in any big city of the USA within the same period. Don't be paranoid. |

jajajaja, you want them to refund your money... because you are scared of the flu... in a city 1,300km from D.F. with no infections?
do you not read the news? the disease is spreading all over your country while it is completely under control here.
go hide under your bed from the big bad evil world. |

There have been NO cases of swine flu anywhere near Cancun. Stop worrying and let him go on his vacation. Tell him to eat foods that are high in vitamin C like Margaritas and Pina Coladas. |

The travel companies are tight with giving back money, I think but not too sure on this: They purchase tickets themselves and then sell them. Can anyone else clarify that? Not sure how they do that part of their business. But I also have another theory: Those kids from NY that got sick probably picked it up off the plane that carried an infected person or at an airport somewhere. Who knows where their lay over was. Just try to relax about it don't read the media sites because they are hyping everything up so much, go to the WHO site. Don't even go to the CDC site because they advise against all non-essential travel to Mexico. A vacation is essential in my book. |

Why don't you try to change the date if they won't refund the ticket. Have him take the trip at a later date. |

I don't think your question is dumb. I was able to switch my vacation a few years ago when a disease outbreak happened in the dominican Republic without any penalty. I do know that some airlines are allowing passengers to change their trips and/or times because of the flu. I would think that you have perhaps not spoken to the right people at priceline. I would try again, but if your BF is determined to go, there is not much you can do about it except hope he does not get sick. If he is not going soon, then there should be no problem. |

Refund on what basis? Fear and false media reports? There is NO Health RISK in the Cancun area at all. There are NO Travel Alerts are issued for this area at all. Cancun is open and doing business as usual. The strong swine type of flu is all over the world now, not just Mexico City. The W.H.O. says, "To restrict travel would be useless and not helpful". E-mail me directly in Cancun at robert@cancuncatamarans.com or call me for facts at 1-888-335-1996. I have lived here 8 years. Anyone that says Mexico is not safe is an uninformed fear-monger and not a very smart person. They are only out to spread fear without knowing the facts, plain and simple.
