I've driven to Michoacan and I would say unless you have a compelling reason it is better to fly. Driving is very expensive in Mexico, the tolls are very high and there are a lot of hidden costs (like crooked cops).
--------------
If you expect to haul things back, and you are coming from the Western US, it is better to drive to South Texas and cross via one of the major crossings there. I know this seems counter-intuitive. You think you should cross at Nogales or at El Paso, but trust me. The tolls are very high, gasoline is expensive, the roads are rough, you need a good hotel where your new truck will be safe, and the cops are crooks. When it is all said and done it is better to cross in a place like Laredo. Most people stop in Zacatecas to spend the night on their way to Michoacan.
--------------
Make nice laminated copies of your passport and driver's license (several copies). Hand them out to cops and plead that you lost your license. They typically blackmail you to return the license. They will threaten you, but they rarely follow through. Also you don't need to provide your passport to hotels. Only produce them if you absolutely have to.
--------------
On other advantage of the shorter route in Mexico is that every time you cross a state line you will be searched by federal troops. Especially if you have things in your truck. Try to pack so they can get at things. They tend to poke at things with sticks and they damage your furniture. Also they will search everything so don't leave valuables in your glove compartment.

Mexican automobile insurance

Car title and if it had a lien, letter from the bank holding the lien giving permission to drive into Mexico

Once you cross the border, you will need a temporary import sticker from the border crossing station

definitely Mexican insurance, but that's a no brainer. I think there are papers guaranteeing it's return to the U.S.I think this is taken care of at the border. It's against the law to sell U.S. cars in Mexico.
Pay attention to all the "driving advice" for Mexico. Stay off the roads at night and do not assume they drive like we do. Our practice of braking for pedestrians and animals, etc, might even prove disastrous for you, so be extra careful in the cities. Look for hotels that have protected parking.

You need to get auto insurance for the truck, US insurance is not acceptabl for liability in Mexico. Now you only need liability but because its 2008 I suggest full coverage.

pollo
go here so you can have a better pictures http://www.mexonline.com/drivemex.htm or this one http://www.bestmex.com/pages/en/Import.htm good look don't bring to much cash in your wallet and don't show people on the streets that you have money if you wanna be corrupt police officers can help you very good but don't do that its bad.
