Rent a mobile home..........instead of a school bus, more amenities.

Good luck

Sounds like a lot of work for only a month in Mexico.

You don't get your import papers at a consulate ... you get them at the border. If you go to Baja or most of Sonora you don't need anything. The vehicle has to be paid for and the registration without a lien holder. A credit card is required to register. A very good idea to get Mexican insurance.

If you mean old cars like Cuba has .... NO. Only an few now and then ... and you never get it across the border

Last things first. If you buy a car or bus in Mexico you could bring it back to the states very easily (as an American, the law is different for Mexicans) you must pay 10 or 15% of the blue book value of the vehicle to legalize it in the states as a tax. To drive it in the state with Mexican tags....free. Just have to buy insurance, that's all. You would never want to do this however, as the used vehicle prices here are severely inflated. I have two Ramblers here. A 1965 (Mexican built) and a 1966 (American built) . I am familiar with those particular laws in both countries.

Other matters. If you're just gnna come here for a month, why not consider flying into Mexico City and take greyhound type busses to either of both coasts or where ever you wanna go.
Gas prices are high here and the toll roads (coutas) are even higher. It's not like in the states. To go from Mexico City to Acapulco (a 4 hour or so drive) it costs almost $60 (USD) just one way. There are other roads, but I took one once....ill advised!!!! It took me 9 hours on the worst road that I had ever seen in my life at about 10-20 miles per hour. I saw more wild burros than people!!!

About the bus................Hey the Grateful Dead did it for a long time!!! If you find one, awesome! how many of you are there gonna be?

Another thing...............sometimes the Mexican Embassies in the USA have people at them specifically for dealing with temporary auto import papers (which is what you are proposing) Call your nearest embassy. I think that they are usually there around Xmas time, I dont remember.

Sounds like a very original and creative idea but I honestly don't think you'll be able to get the school bus accoss the border :( Renting a minivan and staying in hostels is a much better idea!

If you're driving to Mexico after Jan 2008 then you'll each need a passport. The only trouble with a bus is bathroom facilities and lots of windows to cover so that you can sleep.

To take a vehicle into Mexico go to a Mexican consulate and buy a permit. You can drive anywhere with one. You do not have to change anything. You can buy gas that works fine. Stay on toll roads and new highways, do not drive at night. Stay in legal places and do not buy any drugs.
