Yes you will need a current USA passport.
You need to go down to the Post Office (make sure they have the passport service there) fill out that application - you needa take your old expired passport, a photo ID and your personal info as well as your parents info (DOB, married, origin of birth) and get the EXPRESS service , reg. service says they take 3-4 weeks but I got mine in 1.5 week and that one costs $100 , not sure how much extra for the EXPRESS service.

You can go online, download the PDF fill out the application print it and take with you to postal service

If you are flying, you must have a passport. if you are traveling by land, you need your birth certificate and photo I.D. see 1st site below. if you are flying and need a passport, your only hope is one of these:1. use one of the fast passport services listed on the web and pay a large fee, or 2. if you live near one of the cities that has a Regional Passport Agency, you can call ,make an app't, go with your proof that you must travel in 2 weeks r less and get your passport the same day. See 2nd site below for list of these Agencies. See 3d site for all application info and to print out the forms and see what documents you need.

If you are flying you must have a passport. If you are going by land or sea then the most common acceptable id's would be a passport or one the new "enhanced" drivers license which denotes citizenship. Another option is a standard drivers license along with birth certificate.
