I am traveling to Mexico this summer with my siblings. We are all natural born legals.. If I take my ID and birth certificate would that be sufficient?

As of Jan 2008 everyone needs a passport to enter and leave the USA !

Short correct info...To FLY to and from Mexico you must have a passport. BY LAND...photo I.D. and birth certificate. Minors need birth certificate to travel by land and letter or parental permission if not accompanied by both parents....2nd site, paragraph on minors.

cierra_black08
Not anymore.....i think you need a passport...we are becoming so much more striked with border control...have fun paying for that passport....it should be good for 7-10 years...

Rise Against
ALL PERSONS traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.
LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

* CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
* LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

With new travel requirements coming into effect, many people are confused about whether or not they'll need a passport to visit Mexico. The requirements are being phased in gradually and at present, they differ depending on the mode of transportation used to enter and exit the country.

Answer: Travel by air
The U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative requires travelers entering or re-entering the United States by air to present a passport. Even though the Mexican government does not require a passport for U.S. citizens visiting Mexico as tourists, they'll need to present one to go back to the United States by air.

Travel by land or sea
Those traveling by land or sea must present two forms of valid identification such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate and a driver's license or other identification issued by a state or official agency. These travelers will not be required to present a passport until June 1, 2009, and there is a PASS card (Passport card) in the works that will be credit-card sized and cost less than a passport, which will allow travel in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

A passport is the best form of ID
It's a good idea to get a passport if you're planning to travel to Mexico, whether or not it is an official requirement. A passport is the best form of international identification and having one may help you avoid hassles. See the links on the right for information on applying for a U.S. passport.

No you will need a passport it is required now. Go to Walgreen's and get your picture taken give it a month to come in so if I were you I would get it done now. My husband and I are going to Mexico in July this year and we are going this weekend to get our pic's done and send off for the passport! HAVE FUN IN MEXICO!!!

I don't think so... whenever you go to a different country, you need your passport or else you won't be able to get in legally...

My husband works with the border patrol and has told me they said as of June 30th, you have to have a passport to walk or drive across. I don't know how definite this is, but that is from BP.

Land/Sea Travel
Beginning January 31, 2008, the United States will end the practice of accepting oral declarations of citizenship at the border.
* U.S. citizens ages 19 and older must present documentation that proves both identity and citizenship. Identification documents must include a photo, name and date of birth.

http://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/index.shtm

One of the following documents should be presented to prove both identity and citizenship.
Acceptable Documents as of January 31:
* U.S. or Canadian Passport
* U.S. Passport Card (Available spring 2008)*
* Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)*
* State or Provincial Issued Enhanced Driver’s License (when available – this secure driver’s license will denote identity and citizenship.)*
* Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available)*
* U.S. Military Identification with Military Travel Orders
* U.S. Merchant Mariner Document
* Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card
* Form I-872 American Indian Card
* Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Card

Some of the answers above are correct. But, get a passport.
Many people fly, walk or drive into Mexico , recently, and with good ID they are allowed through. Will the US or Canada let you back in ? Yes. But, is it worth the hassle, and the new regs say a passport for the US as of June, and Canada tends to be a little flexible for Canadians, born in the country.

josazja
My family traveled to Mexico in October 2007 and was told that we needed one. Depending on your age they are good for 10 years. I think if you are under 18 then it is only 5.

i don't know b/c I thought they suspended the passport till next June
