You need a passport for re-entry back to the States, don't take that chance, the Border Patrol is getting tighter with all the immigration problems.

Just plan ahead and get a passport, what's the wait time now?. I heard its less than 30 days. I go to Mexico all the time for the strip clubs haha

If you're driving, the answer is "not yet"... at least not till the end of the year. You eventually have to get one, so start now before an emergency comes up and you're stuck in a funny situation...

RAM is right, passports are only required for AIR TRAVEL to and from Mexico and Canada. If you really want to be sure, check out

hmm...When I lived in California all you needed was ID.

things have changed so much in 3 years. I would call Greyhound Bus Lines. They would know.
But just know this. Mexico ain't worried about you stayin over there. It's the other way around.
;)

I heard that you need a passport to re-enter the US.. not to get into Mexico, just when you come back to the United States. I don't know if you are just going for the day, though.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

I just went to Mexico - and to my understanding with the police there - you need a passport for coming and going - even for one day.

The thing is that anything outside domestically you do need a passport. Even if you're just going to Mexico and coming backing into the U.S. Better safe than sorry.
