Some people STILL do not have it straight! Those who said you do NOT need a passport to DRIVE to and from Mexico are correct. That requirement will not start until June1, 2009. See site below. You will need your birth certificate and a gov't issuedphoto I.D...like a dr. license or state I.D. card. If you are under 18...you do not need the photo I.D. tho it really is a good idea to have one, but you must have a letter of permission from your parents signed by both and notarized giving you permisssion to travel alone ( if you are not going with someone over 18)....or giving permission for a specific responsible adult to take you. See 2nd site and read the section on minors under "Entry Requirements." |

no, not if you are driving. but you will need a state issued id card instead of a student id. in texas they only cost around $15, so where ever you are, i imagine it would be around the same price.
if you are flying, yes, you will need a passport.
here are some websites to help you:

In accordance with dispositions by the National Immigration Institute, in order to enter Mexico US citizens should show any US official ID. Passports are not required.
Nonetheless, US citizens must bear in mind the requirements set by the US government for re-entry.
All Americans traveling by air outside the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States . This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, by the summer of 2009. Until then, U.S. citizens traveling by sea must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization), or other WHTI compliant document such as a passport card for entry or re-entry to the U.S. Sea travelers should also check with their cruise line and countries of destination for any foreign entry requirements.
If you travel before your birthday:
Minors: Mexican law requires that any non-Mexican citizen under the age of 18 departing Mexico must carry notarized written permission from any parent or guardian not traveling with the child to or from Mexico. This permission must include the name of the parent, the name of the child, the name of anyone traveling with the child, and the notarized signature(s) of the absent parent(s). The State Department recommends that the permission should include travel dates, destinations, airlines and a brief summary of the circumstances surrounding the travel. The child must be carrying the original letter – not a facsimile or scanned copy – as well as proof of the parent/child relationship (usually a birth certificate or court document) – and an original custody decree, if applicable. Travelers should contact the Mexican Embassy or closest Mexican Consulate for current information. |

A law just passed on January 1, 2008, You must have a passport to go into and back out of Mexico if you are an American Citizen and also if you're going on a cruise to the Bahamas, etc. I only know this because we went on a cruise right after this law passed and my Husband who is from Mexico is now an American citizen and we went there just a couple weeks ago and we had to have passports. |

You could probably make it to Mexico with out a passport, however...you will probably need a valid passport to come back home to the U.S. you really don't want to be turned back to Mexico do you just because of no passport... |
