People overrating how dangerous Mexico City is?

I just visited Mexico City about a month ago...and I absolutely loved it to death...I didn't feel in danger at any moment..
There were 2 police guards on every block corner and basically just ALOT of police all over the city...

People also overrate about dangers with taxi/metro crimes...The only thing i'd suggest about taxi's is do not take the buggy cabs because they only have 1 passenger door, but the rest are mostly fine..Metro is fantastic, do not listen to what people say about not going on the metro..it is the main way of transportation around the city besides car, tons of people use it...I was going on the metro at 10 at night with no problems at all, metro was packed at that time too...only time i'd say it's not a good idea to go on metro is if there was almost no one on it but it's packed almost always...The public transportation in the city is fabulous, Microbus, metrobus, metro, taxi..so many things and they're all great..

Mexico city = best city in mexico - no doubt
Additional Details
the people were some of the kindest people i've met in the whole world

Great to hear your experiences. I am so glad you put them here to dispell so much misinformation.

I've been to Mexico city for 3 weeks and as a gringo have done it all: metro, beatle cabs, walk in the middle of the night home to where I stayed, gone to shady markets, etc... Nothing happened at all crime wise.

I was also told to watch out and bla blab bla how bad it all was but from my experience it was totally enjoyable. I like Mexican food and the local folks were in general very nice and helpful. So overall any time again.

Your question is in the form of a statement to which I appreciate.

Do you have any more questions???

I know what your thinking.

You were afraid of Mexicans in general at one time too.

They are some of the best people on this planet and my love for them is always and forever.

I've lived for 2 years in mexico city, visited a lot of mexican states.

lived 2 years in usa and travel around also.

I've traveled to canada, europe and some other places and the only place my camara was stole was in a train going from Vintimillia to Rome...

so the most dangerous place in the world is a train in Italy.

Yeah, well, people tend to exagerrate things a lot. However maybe you were just lucky because us chilangos know pretty damn well to avoid places like Tepito at night unless we're being guarded by one of their people.

Never been to NYC, but I figure the subway and simply being on the streets here are pretty similar: I'd be worried if there weren't a ton of people everywhere.
I was present when a crook was escaping after robbing who knows what from a woman in the metro (and the place was filled with people in the middle of the day), but this was just 1 time and I've travelled by metro hundreds of times with no problems of that sort.

I've never been mugged myself (and I frequent rather dangerous neighborhoods a lot) but I know people who have been mugged. Guess it's just good or bad luck.

Well, it isn't that riding taxis is dangerous, it's that most people don't seem to be able to spot a pirated taxi when they see one. I've seen a few of them (all of them in the Coyacán area) but never been on one cuse I know how to spot them. Sitio taxis are safe. I'd be more worried about crashing when riding a microbus (which hans't happened yet though I've been nearly tossed off a micro a few times haha).

Hrm.. cops everywhere. Guess a tourist doesn't mind that but I wouldn't. Haha, when you are forced to give bribes, you lose sympathy for having cops everywhere finding barely legal excuses to mug you.

Nice to see you had a nice time in this city. ;)

people do exagerate a lot about mexico, but keep in mind that it's like any other city in the world, crime stealing, friendly people, etc. I went to Zacatecas and i mean it is the best place in Mexico...

I am glad things went well for you. But, no, the danger factor is not over rated.

yes they do overate it, consider it like New York and Los Angeles both very nice but their outskirts not so nice,

Thanks for share to the world your experience.
I'm mexican, not from México city, and what happens, in my experience, is that it is more dangereus to be a mexican (specially a succeful one) in México than beeing a foreigner tourist. I do have bad experinces in México city, not on myself, but on belongings.
