Possibly moving from US to Puebla, MX. Need advice.?

My husband might have a job opportunity in Puebla but before the offer is official, we want to make sure we've covered our bases by doing as much research as possible so we know what we'd be getting ourselves into if we accept the offer.

First things first, what is the housing situation like? Cost of housing? Rent?

The employer would cover the cost of private schooling for our kids so we're going to send them to a private school. So far we've only found one American private school in Puebla. Is there only one? Are there (non-American) private schools I should consider? Our children are quite young (5 and 3).

Transportation: We've read on various websites/message boards that it might be better to utilize the public transportation because the city streets can be crazy, is this true?

If you have any other advice, please share it. Please don't tell me that we wouldn't like it in Mexico because (insert incredibly rude or stereotypical reason here). I am of Mexican decent myself (raised in a home with Mexican traditions and values) and my husband has lived abroad before (the language isn't a problem). We know that Mexico isn't the same as the United States and we wouldn't be considering this opportunity if we didn't think we could handle living abroad.

Puebla is lovely!!! you'll find a city founded by the spaniards during the XVI century that has grown so much as to "absorb" a nearby ancient town with the largest base of a pyramid in the world: Cholula. The most delicious food in the country is there. Modern malls, most American chains such as Home depot, Office depot, Sams, Walmart, Burger king, Italiannis, etc, etc, etc.
Cost of housing, how much do you want to pay? you'll see Mexico is a country of contrasts so there are cheap an very poor homes, which would not be your choice and also mansions. An average large house on a nice gated neighborhood would cost you around US$1,200.00 (monthly rent)
Private schools many good ones, from Montessori schools to very strict ones. Here's a link of a kindergarden where the "pretty and nice" people go to, it is catholic:

Also http://www.cap.edu.mx/index_e.htm which is the American school, very prestigious.
I'd say get there and go check out the ones close to your home, follow your gut feeling. The good part is that your kids are young you can afford to have them not going to school for a little bit.
If you are going to live there, get a car, taxis are somewhat expensive around $4.00 a ride, secure if you call them from home or take them from a taxi stand. Buses and small buses are terrible.
Drive carefully and always pay attention to the road and cars coming without much respect of the laws and common sense, just be careful and have an insurance, don't expect drivers to be too smart, not all are.
I hope if this is the best for you family it will happen for you.

A whole different ball-game cutie, customs, schools, food, people. It takes some getting used to.I think more mature people can handle the change over better then the younger generation, first of all the young ones need to have the latest items.Their they are minus alot of the latest stuff. Then again it depends where your at.Then theirs the part about missing the good old U.S.A.,it does happen.Good luck!

Puebla is a great city. Only Mexico City has more sights. It's one of the best places in Mexico for side trips, so you'll have a lot to see in the area.

From my experience staying the center of the city for three weeks, traffic was only bad during rush hour, but in the center, parking is difficult.

Taxis are reasonable. It takes a little time to learn how to use the collectivos (mini buses) that crisscross the city.

The regional cuisine of Puebla is one of highest regarded in the country.

I recently tried to find info on rentals in Puebla online. I found almost nothing.

and look at the listings under the map.

Puebla is more than 2 000 000 people, is a big City but is not as hectic as Guadalajara or Monterrey, the infrastructure however is not made for a large city, and people have the tendency of not driving very friendly, But is far away from the ways of Mexico City. and about how safe this city is , i can tell you is one of the safest despite the size,

As for where to live I will suggest you Angelópolis, Zavaleta, La Paz, and specially Cholula. Try to live inside on one of this 10 houses complex that have a door man and kids can play free around, also there are this new modern apartments but since you have kids is better to be in a house.

As for school for the children try Madero Institute is pretty good and also they have special interest in sports, very uncommon for Mexican Schools.

The driving will be a problem at first but soon you will get used too.

A good book to read: "Head for Mexico" by Don Adams.

Driving in city center of any large Mexican city is an adventure, but once you learn to drive like a Mexican, and figure out how the streets work, you'll do fine. I tool around Guadalajara and haven't been hit yet. Public transportation is usually good for commuting, but for errands around your neighborhood and driving the kids around, you'll want a car.

Companies like ReMax, Century 21 and Coldwell Banker generally have offices in major Mexican cities and can help you with housing information.

If you aren't already on MexicoConnect they have regional boards you might find helpful.
