I'm Mexican but my husband is American. We are supposed to go to D.F. in Junio to see my family. He has been hearing all the stuff in the news about the violence in Mexico and now he thinks its not safe and doesn't want to go. I think we'll be fine. All the violence is on the border, right? And, it's not like we are touristas. We'll be in D.F. staying with my tios. Would other native Mexicanos feel safe traveling home right now? It's just American's being paranoid, right?
p.s. My husband is also a little worried becuase when we go I'll be 5 months pregnant, but like I said, we'll be with family. My prima just had a baby so if anything goes wrong I can go see her Dr.

Mexico City is the most populated city in the world, so that means that their crime rate is high compared to other cities. I travel to Mexico every month, and by myself.

Dont worry too much about how you are gonna be when you are staying in Mexico City. Theres a lot of problems but nothing more than in any other city. You can come here and enjoy the city and you are gonna be safe.
Just use your common sense to be safe.

Mira Soy Mexicano, Mido 6' 5" inch peso 320 pounds, my family they are all tall people some with green or blue eyes, lot of blondish people too, and there is planty of people like me in Mexico, not in the same amount thatn in USA, but i even have found people bigger than me in north of México.
I´m from Chihuahua, and lived in Mexico city for almost 8 years among los cuerpecitos de chile y caras de chango (chilangos), and yes its dangerous, but not like is being shown in the USA media, that always say and exagerate all things about this land, just be sure to use common sense and keep around good neighborhoods, don´t look for drugs or try to buy stuff in markets that are not safe, like tepito and lagunilla, be sure not to exchange dollars right on the airport, and not hang around the east side of the city. |

In Mexico City the problem of violence is the same that the other big cities, not be afraid you´ll be fine, como en otras grandes ciudades las problematicas son las mismas trafico, robos, mucho depende de que zona tengas planeado vivir y como te comprtes en la calle lo que importa aquà y en todos lados es la actitud ustedes conserven un low profile y cuidense sobre todo de las personas más adineradas y gente en el gobierno. You will be fine. Mexico City has around 20 million people and yes, there is violence and crime, but if you take basic precautions you will be fine. I've lived here most of my life and never had a problem, my husband is european (blonde, blue eyes) and has never had a problem either.
Keep away from dangerous neighborhoods (your family there will advise you), don't show off a lot of jewelry or money, and study your travelling routes beforehand (buses, metro, etc.)
Don't carry a lot of money, nor your passport or any important document.
Take taxis only from "sitios de taxis", not from the street.
It is great you already have regerence of an ob/gyn, just to make sure you have someone at hand in case you need him/her (there are excelent doctors and hospitals in Mexico).
Don't take money from ATMs in the street at night, enter a supermarket, they have ATMs there. Better yet, do it only during the day.
Buy a local Cell Phone if you can, they are cheap (calls are expensive though) and you will keep connected with your hubby and family.

idk..maybe your husband will attract attention b/c he's white? (that's if he is, i'm not sure).. I totally understand your husband's worry. I watch Univision almost every night w/my family, and w/all the drug stuff and violence..it does get scary.
Not ALL the violence is on the border though, and the D.F. is a scary place too.
My family is from the D.F. just like yours, and we just came back from there in January. we've been going EVErY year for the past 20 years for x-mas and New years.
you know, you just gotta take your precautions.
my mom was born and raised in the D.F. and still everytime we go, she tells my sis and I "Mijas tengan MUCHO cuidado, no se confien de la gente, tengan MUCHO cuidado"

i don't think that being pregnant will effect your trip much..like you said you'll be w/your family and if something happens you can see your cousins Dr.
it's just common sense to NOT be out at night past 10pm...you know??? it's like my mom tells me,
"don't be out at night b/c there are some crazy people out there, and the people out at night past 11, are just looking for trouble".
I think you and your husband will be safe and i'm sure your family is going to take good care of the both of you and they'll tell you what dangers and stuff to look out for....
