Emperors did not live in pyramids. They were religious sites.

From what it is known, the were built mostly for religious and royal ceremonies. They were not built to live in, they are not homes! We don't know how many other uses they were built for, but it must have been very important, that is why they built them so Impressive and Majestic.

The pyramids of the ancient cities were, in a large part, for ceremonial sacrifices. Have you seen the Mel Gibson movie Apocalypto? It showed how they removed the hearts of victims and rolled the bodies down the steps. Cortez saw some of his men sacrificed this way in Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City).
Pyramids were also the burial places for rulers. Pacal, the ruler of Palenque was buried in the Temple of the Inscriptions. Ah Cacao, a ruler of Tikal, was buried in Temple I and his wife was interred in Temple II.
Since these ancient cities were trading zones, the pyramids were a good place to post lookouts to watch for raiding parties trying to seek up and steal goods and take slaves.
And since these ancient cities were trading zones, someone would have to settle disputes between traders. One trader may have a piece of jade and he wants five obsidian blades for it. And another trader may only want to offer three obsidian blades. If they can't work out there difference, an official would be called down from his seat on the pyramid to decide what is a fair trade.
