1. I feel safer in Mexico City than I do in Washington DC, but I still wear a money belt under my clothes. It's the safest place to carry your passport, Tourist Card and 90 percent of your money.
2. You'll be able to find Chinese, Japanese and Korean restaurants, but try the Mexican restaurants, they are not like the Mexican restaurant you find in the United States (which are really Tex-Mex cuisine).
3. Nice, but take a jacket or sweater for the nights.
4. Mostly clean, but you can find some bad areas--stay out of those areas.
5. I use the Metro (subway) when I'm there, but avoid the morning and evening rush hours when the cars are jammed packed--pickpockets can press up against you when standing holding a pole. But when you can get a seat, they can't get to where ever you keep your wallet. But if you only keep 10 percent of your money in your wallet and 90 percent in your money belt, you won't loose too much if a pickpocket gets your wallet.

The first response was not well-informed.

???Every Mexican has been robbed 3 times??? Mexico City is safe if you don't wander off to areas that should be avoided. Get the Moon Guide to Mexico. Some areas that are okay during the day should be avoided at night. The Moon guide can help you with that.

It is DRY in December. The rainy season is June through mid-September. In December the days will be fine, but due to the high elevation, the nights will be cool and sometimes cold.

There are so many choices for eating, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean restaurants. I found some good places while looking for places recommended in guide books.

Comida Corrida is a complete meal. Prices range from 30 pesos up. Some places have one or two choices for the main course, others may have several choices with the price of the meal varying with the main course (plato fuerte) chosen.

Mexico City is surprisingly clean. Cleaner than many US cities.

The city system is fairly good. The subways are clean and the trains come about every three minutes. I used the buses more, but you need to be able to speak Spanish.

The Turibus is a good way to get to know the city. There are two routes, center and south. They use double decked buses with the top deck opened. The center bus run about one every 15 minutes. You can get off and on at any stop. You ticket is good for all day. I got a three day pass at the beginning of my stay.

The taxis have a bad reputation, but the problem has nearly disappeared. In February of this year the government came up with a new licensing system. The license plates of taxis begin with A or B and the same number is also painted on the taxi. To play it safe, check first.

mexico city is like most big cities...you have to be careful where you are and what your doing. ive never felt worried during the day doing the tourist thing in any neighborhood...and i get off the beaten track. but, most of the area surrounding the zocalo is safe even at nite...but a few blocks north past the cathedral or several blocks south and you could be in trouble. its also not safe to hail a taxi off the street...call one or have your hotel call you a taxi. mexico city is fairly clean in most of the tourist areas where youd be likely to visit...but it is one of the biggest cities in the world...pollution and waste disposal are a problem. mexico is a great exciting city with tons of things to see and do....the turibus, which you can catch anywhere but from the zocalo seems easiest, is a double decker tour bus that runs a circuit hitting tourist spots throughout the city is a great way to start your visit and get your bearings. food-wise, anything that you could want can be found... ive never gotten sick eating anything and i eat where the locals eat....but i am careful. if its served hot and looks good and people are eating it, its probably ok....even water in most modern hotels are safe to drink but why risk it?

I'm, afraid I disagree with the previous answer:
1. is it safe? It depends on what part of the city you are, the same as every other place in the world, and it's not true that all Mexicans have been robbed. Just make sure you take all usual precautions when you're there
2. i'm asian and would the food be okay for me? Absolutely, Mexico City is a huge city with some of the best international cuisine. You have tons of options to choose from
3. how is the weather their during december? it can get a little chilly
4. is it clean? Depends on what part of the city you go to.
5. is the city system and tour things pretty good? Yes, there are a lot of options for tours, many of them very affordable. Check out the links below and have fun!

I've lived here for like what, 15 years?, I go to the colonia Doctores almost everyday which is famous for being a very dangerous neighborhood and I've never, ever been mugged or even pickpocketed. It's just luck or perhaps common sense.

I feel more safe going out to the corner Oxxo for a snack at 3 am than walking alone in Los Angeles.

Last December it was unusually sunny and warm (it got to be around 80°F during the middle of the day!!!). The coldest months are between September-November (though the weather these days has been very tame, I haven't found the need to wear a sweater yet), but the nights are typically chilly. Bring sweaters and very importantly, an umbrella. Mexico City can and will rain on oddball times of the year.

Different neighborhoods are cleaner than others. My neighborhood is typically very clean, but people in the State of Mexico are somewhat more civilized and throw trash into the garbage can. However, even in the somewhat gritty parts of the city, I think Chicago is dirtier. There's far more homeless people in LA than here wandering in the streets too.

The subway is easy to use. There is a unique fee for any amount of stations you visit: 2 pesos. That's even less than a quarter!!! The price to pay is that there's few subway lines given how big the city is and the trains stop a lot. Avoid the light green line if you can because it's the worst line of all.

Regarding avoiding the subway at rush hour, that's not a bad idea. But you could always visit the Hidalgo station on a weekday at 9 am to take some photos and experience the chilango rush hour sardine lifestyle. Maybe they should call that part of the city little Tokyo or something... You don't need to know spanish to use the subway.

I also reccomend the comida corrida. The doctores is a dangerous place at night, but during the day it's a pretty average area and has a lot of nice comida corrida fondas. A full meal (healthy food too!) for only 4 dollars isn't bad at all. Chicken broth or pasta soup - mexican style rice - main dish - dessert and a jug of fruit water or a can of soda is the generic comida corrida formula. Restaurants have about 4 rotating main dishes that change everyday but many of them always serve generic main dishes like milanesa in case you don't like the other options. Desserts vary a bit but they generally offer stuff like custard pudding, jello, rice & milk or fruit.
Please remember though that people here at dinner at 3-4 pm.

I highly reccomend you to try tortas and tacos. Be aware that some taco joints sells stuff like fried blood and cow brains if you're not into trying out "exotic" food. A lot of parts of the city have tianguis (street markets) on Saturdays with good & cheap local cuisine. Nice chance to hang out with the locals eating food locals eat.

As for asian food, there's not a lot of authentic asian restaurants, but they are out there. There's some nice ones in the San Angel area and in Paseo de la Reforma at the height of Monte de los Urales.

I've never tried the Turibus (would like to if I ever have the cash and the time), it seems pretty good and shows you downtown areas tourists like a lot. Not bad for 25 bucks. The buses are like the two level buses that are so famous in London.

Oh, one thing, you're asian and since there's almost no asians in the city, you stand out. Be prepared to have a ton of people staring at you constantly. Don't think it's because they wish to mug you, it's that you physically stand out a lot.

1. is it safe? No, Mexico City is not safe. Every Mexican living in Mexico has been robbed on the average of 3 times.
2. i'm asian and would the food be okay for me? Go to good restaurants to eat. Don't go to the ones that look poor because you have higher changes of getting sick. The food is delicious so eat all your like, my favorites are "chicken enchiladas, green sauce"
3. how is the weather their during december? Mild cold and rain.
4. is it clean? It is clean but not as clean as any state in U.S.
5. is the city system and tour things pretty good? They are pretty good, unfortunately they will charge a lot. They charge as if you were in the United States. They make good money with tourists. But it is safe and you need to go out with them so you will be safe. Get your tourist guide from the hotel.
