Polanco.

It's a very upscale section of downtown Mexico City, near Chapultepec Park. You'll find dozens of international designer boutiques there as well as intimate upscale shops with service catering to the wealthy elite. The neighborhood has some of Mexico City's most distinguished 5-star restaurants and a lot of high-end hotels catering to executive travelers (like the JW Marriott, the Presidente Intercontinental, etc.)

The main artery through Polanco is Avenida Presidente Masaryk, which is often thought of as the 5th Avenue of Mexico City (again, mostly due to all the luxury shopping spots). There's also art galleries and places like that, and you're close to some of the city's most famous attractions: like the National Anthropology Museum, Chapultepec Castle, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

A quick shopping trip or lunch in Polanco is a viable 4-hour excursion from the airport.

Have fun!

Unfortunately it´s really not too much time to visit some place outside the airport, because transportation will take your 4 hrs. just in the chaotic Mexico's city traffic.
So, I strongly recommend you to stay in the airport, there a re a lot of shopping places and restaurants inside the airport.
You can find from shops of every kind, and restaurants from Mexican, Italian, Chinese and International food.

Welcome to Mexico !

I concur with the majority of the above-- that you don't have time to leave the airport because the traffic is often conjested bumper to bumper and it's too risky.

That being said, there is a giant Walmart superstore near the airport you could check out!

hmmmm i also think u should stay in the airport :S but u can do a lot of things at the airport, theres even a spa, u can shop 4 jewerly (mexican silver designs) or souvenirs

I wouldn't recommend it. One of the main highways to the airport, the Circuito Interior, is under construction, making the travel time even longer. There are some decent restaurants and duty free shops (if booze, candy or smokes are your thing) in terminals 1 and 2 of the airport. Terminal 2 is very new, with some nice restaurants.

I think you should stay at the airport, There is a construction arround the airport so maybe you can be late. But there are a lot of restaurants and some stores. If you stay around will be the best.

The Metro, (subway) station is within a couple of blocks of the airport, trains run every few minutes and the system is modern, safe, fast and easy to navigate, You can be in central plaza in a matter of minutes with time to spare for a lunch and a little look around.
Donde es el metro? and a close eye on your watch will do the trick and certainly fill in the layover in an exilerating adventure if you are still of that persuasion when you arrive.

I love Mexico and know the city quite well. But, I hate the airport and you have no time to really see or do. Instead, change your flight plans, eliminate Cancun, If that is your destination, an enjoy one of the world's great cities.

You don't have the time to get out of the airport.

Even in good conditions when you factor in the time to get off the plane and the time to go back through immigration and boarding, you wouldn't have much time to get somewhere and go shopping. With Mexico City traffic being what it is, a trip anywhere decent is out of the question.

Unfortunately that leaves too much time to kill in the airport, but that's life when traveling.

dvcgurl
ask the cab driver whats the closest resterant and shopping place is or just east and shop at the airport so not rushing incase there traffic

Yes, to the head doctor, or catch a taxi and hope they don't drug you, and cut out your kidney, run don't walk.
