If you stay away from areas that need air-conditioning in the summer - like the coasts. Electricity for AIR can cost $300us a month. Also like others said, forget the gringo enclaves if you are tight for money ... although you can always find cheaper places after you are there awhile.

I have a very nice 3 bdrm 2 bath house a block from the beach on the west coast for $360us .. and I do use AIR in the summer.

BTW ... a long term retirement VISA (FM3) requires an income of around $1250us

You do not specify whether this amount covers the needs for one or two persons. If you keep away from the classic sites where the "gringos" retire, like San Miguel Allende and Ajijic , Jalisco 1,300 Canadian will allow you to live very modestly. In the above mentioned locations: NO WAY forget it.

yeah don't go to san miguel de allende...or this lake place...i forgot the name. but a regular city...sure. just make sure you don't get desperately ill or something. i made about 900 USD a month in Aguascalientes, lived in a really cheap apartment...2 bedroom, about 900sq ft. ( for 150 bucks a month) and i was fine.

Hi I am an American living in Mexico. I have been here a year and 3/4 and live in a non-touristy area. I live on about about 1200 t0 1300 American dollars a month, but many people live on less. You will want to avoid the gringo enclaves like Lake Chappala and San Miquel de Allende. Different parts of the country have lower costs of living. I live in the state of Veracruz. It is beautiful, has a low cost of living, nearly perfect weather. A small town usually has lower costs than a big city, but you can usually find a small town within 30 min of a big city for conveniences. If you would like to email me, I could go into the details of monthly expenses and other info you need before moving.

I'm retired living on SS about the same as you describe. I live in Baja California Norte and have owned my home here (by the beach) for 25 years. Just recently retired. The costs of utilities have skyrocketed in the past few years and taxes appear to be valued by where gringos live. Many of us old gringos thought this would be cheap living, but now everything is quite expensive...gas and food too. You might check out in the Guadalupe Valley, the Baja wine country, a ways from the beach, but a nice area and cheaper than the Trump Tower condos at a half millionUS. Good luck, getting old isn't for sissies.

Check internet for americans living in mexico. Your money is worth more as US dollars are worth more in mexico also. Good luck....
