Round trip snailmail to Mexico - security? |
I've been reading about concerns over sending packages to Mexico.
What I want to do is send a medium sized manilla envelope with a letter, a few dozen sheets of paper (genealogy forms for my relatives to take a look at and fill in the blanks for), a return envelope, and return postage in the way of one of those $2 return postage vouchers. It'll be going to Guadalajara.
Should I be concerned about my mail not getting there or not coming back? Frankly, I'm more concerned about it not coming back once the information is filled in. If it doesn't get there, I can always send it again.
Any tips? Past experience with snail mail back and forth to Mexico? |

I periodically have mail sent to me in Mexico, and it is not a sure-thing. You absolutely should have it sent to a business address. The home-mail delivery success rate is horrible.
Honestly, I would make the investment for a DHL shipment. It will cost you a lot more (I usually spend about $40), but the peace of mind is worth it. |

I used to live in GDL and had mail sent to me by the US Post Office global express and it always arrived in anywhere from 7-10 days. It is sent in a cardboard envelope and delivered to the address on the envelope or held at the Mexican Post Office. For sending something back to the US I would recommend UPS or Federal Express, it costs around $30 but arrives in about 2 days. I have had friends who have had the contents of packages opened and stolen. All they received was the box. |

yes, the truth is that it takes a miracle to get there, and a bigger one to receive it back. i have only received items using DHL, and this kind of weird version of the US mail where they pass it on to a private mail carrier here in the US...i'm sorry i can't think of the name. it's not the normal deal...i remember i had to fill out some kind of customs form and a bunch of paperwork. and that version took 4 weeks. another relative sent me something that took 3 months using that same method.
either way it will go through customs...that's what takes so long, and that's usually where it gets lost or stolen. since you have an envelope, that doesn't really appeal to theives...so i don't see it getting stolen. but i do see someone thinking, "eh, it's just a stupid letter." and then suddenly it never arrives.
send it DHL. it WILL get there. just send it the cheapest way you can. |

Don't worry, it will arrive in 3 weeks. it is only dangerous to send checks. |

If you really want it to get there use DHL. or another service...I used the post office here (florida) and i sent mine in Dec the begining and they got it on valentimes day! They sent me stuff back and to my dismay I NEVER recieved it...So you should have DHL take it both ways there an back...You cant email that??? They can have someone help them retriev it for like 4 pesos...
Good Luck~ |
