Safe places in Mexico?

I am 18 years old, and I am going on a vacation to mexico with my friend (who is also 18) We are both girls and I am just wondering what places are safe to be in mexico, and what places we should try to stay away from.
Thanks!

You should tells us your interests. Someone could tell you about a nice beautiful safe city, like Queretaro, but perhaps you are interested in a beach location. Others may recommend a beach town, but you are interested in someplace with more cultural activities and interesting architecture.

Mexico isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Use your head and don't do anything there that you wouldn't do here and you'll be just fine. Don't get drunk and wonder around in back alleys after dark, don't wear expensive jewelry, etc.

Why do people say mexico is so dangerous, only the big cities just like the U.S. or any other country.

Besides Mexico City, nearby places that I'd suggest are:

San Miguel de Allende, Puebla, and Guanajuato. They're just a few hours from Mexico and are BEAUTIFUL colonial cities with lovely architecture, cuisine and authentic shopping experiences.

Keep smart and don't get drunk, also, don't hire taxis straight off the street, have the hotel suggest a company (called "sitio" in mexico), get their number and dial them when you need them. You could call the "sitio" and ask them for a flat all-day rate, that way you'll have a driver that'll get you everywhere without you worrying about what taxis to take. Make sure the hotel and your parents know what company you took, and maybe the name of the driver, just to be on the safe side. Mexico City is HUGE, with lot's of traffic and crappy public transportation, so having a driver makes the best sense. The best areas to visit, walk, eat, and shop are: Polanco (very upscale), Condesa, Coyoacan, Centro Historico. Santa Fe is a nice place, but it's mostly new buildings and shopping centers full of things that are twice as expensive as the ones in the US, so it's better to shop at smaller boutiques in Condesa or Polanco.

Do not wear fancy jewelry or watches, and don't show too much skin. Mexicans are conservative and you might attract too much unwanted attention if you wear shorts, miniskirts or skimpy tubes, we're simply not used to that and it screams "american tourist".

Keep your eyes open and enjoy, Mexico is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, rich in history, delicious food and beautiful architecture. Have fun!

Mexico really is like every other country, it's got it's good parts and it's bad parts.

Evade Cuidad Juarez mostly, it has a pretty bad history.

If you're coming to Mexico City I would say always keep your head where it's supposed to be. Don't get hypnotized by the cheap prices in flea markets. Never go to one alone, always keep on the lookout. If you see a person following you or a group of people acting strangely around you be on the lookout.
I suggest staying away from from places in the center of Mexico City like La "Merced" or "Tepito". They are huge flea markets that are in the street with really cheap stuff but I wouldn't suggest going inside them specially La Merced. Also I wouldn't suggest "Iztapalapa" It's really bad these days.

Those are main places that you should try to stay away from.

Places like "Polanco", "Santa Fe", "Chapultepec", "Las Lomas, "Las Palmas", and much of the center of mexico is pretty safe to walk. You can find a lot of cheap things here.

NOTE: If you're shopping on the street have someone doing the shopping and the other being on the lookout. There is a lot of security but you can never be too sure.

I hope you enjoy your stay. Mexico City is pretty much like any other city. Except with a bit more traffic. haha.

P.S. don't mind alex, LOL. people here are actually very friendly.

I'd say that Cancun is probably the safest city, but it's also the least like a real Mexican city--you'll ask youself, "am I really in a foreign country?" There are many great places in Mexico; the only places I'd suggest you stay away from are the border towns of Juarez, Nuevo Laredo and Tijuana.
There's lots of nice places to visit on the Riveria Maya--click the link below.

I suggest Cuernavaca, Puebla, Taxco, and Oaxacan beaches. Each of these are a good place to go where you can find fun and be safe if you follow the same safety rules as you would back home.

cancun is the safest city to visit in mexico....esp if you never leave the hotel zone. but cancun isnt the real mexico....if youre ok with sun in the fun youll be fine there but to see/experience the real mexico id go to zacatecas or guadalajara....but getting there is more difficult. guadalajara has direct flights from the u.s but zacatecas probably doesnt...both very interesting and very culturally rich towns and are safe for the most part.

Guadalajara! Actually anyplace should be safe enough unless you are pretty naive and if you don´t speak spanish you should keep yourself in the touristic places.

But as they say, if you go searching for trouble it will find you.

I agree with the above, stay AWAY from Juarez especially, and other border towns. Juarez has a terrible history of missing, raped, and murderd girls and women.
As for the rest of the country, it depends on if you are after a tourist/resort type experience or want to enjoy the true culture of Mexico. Also if you want to be on the beach or inland.
The state of Oaxaca would be a good bet for any of these choices. The capital city of Oaxaca is inland and has a beautiful historic area and is close to the ruins at Monte Alban. The coastal town of Huatulco is a small-scale resort town with beautiful beaches and many American and Canadian ex-pats living there year-round. Places like Puerto Angel (about an hour up the coast from Huatulco) are much more local and much less resort-y.
I guess, if you're not fluent in Spanish, I would not recommend you go away from a resort area without a trusted local guide. And I would be very mindful of your transportation choices. Don't get drunk, don't go home with/take home someone you meet there, don't dress provocatively (what your mom would consider provocative is probably a better guideline)... and use your common sense. Don't put yourself where it would be easy for someone to take advantage of you.

alex
stay out of mexico no one wants you or your race here
