Safe to travel by bus from Cancun to Belize? |
I'm traveling alone from Cancus to Belize, by bus. I'm trying to look for Premiere buses. Is it safe to do this alone? If not, how can I further protect myself and my belongings (besides the obvious ... traveling during the day, etc..) ?

It should be safe based on our experience. My wife and I moved to Belize from the States by flying into Cancun and then taking a bus to Belize. The process we used was simple - we flew into Cancun and arrived sometime in the morning. We took a taxi to the bus station and just asked for buses to Chetumal - a city near the Mexico/Belize border. We took the next bus to Chetumal - it was a very comfortable and relaxing ride to Chetumal (about 4-5 hours) and although we were a family it looked like a single women could have made the ride without any problems as well. We then stayed in Chetumal for the evening (it was getting to late to make it into Belize) and then finished the rest of the ride to Belize City in about 3-4 hours. This part of the trip went without problems or difficulties as well. Of course, once you are in Belize City you can find transport to the rest of the country fairly easily.
The one thing that I would have done differently was not exchange my US dollars for Belize dollars at the border. The US dollar is universally accepted in Belize (1 USD for 2 BZD) so there is no need to get Belize currency.
That is about it. Take care and good luck on your travels to Belize. We have been living here now for about 2.5 years and it is a country that has a great deal to offer for travelers. |

Yes, Mexican 1st clss and Luxury buses are exceptionally nice and safe. Just be wise, use your commonsense. I know women who travel all over Mexico by bus alone with no problem. you can go to the main bus station in Cancun to ask about times and fares...usually there are several buses a day. I tried to find a bus line on line to look at schedules, but could not...not all the lines in mexico have websites. |

Yes, it´s safe, use the ADO GL from Cancun to Chetumal, then the Tourist Bus that heads to Guatemala, from the rear of the Bus Terminal in Chetumal.
