Should I be concerned about my trip to Mexico?

I am leaving for Playa del Carmen Mexico in 2 weeks. I was not concerned when I heard about the drug wars at first. Now every person I talk to has been telling me I'm crazy for going. What do you think?

Hola. Unfortunately the media does tend to make most people crazy paranoid. Those people saying you are crazy to go -- bet they haven't ever left the comfort of their living rooms and CNN!! Oh its so Orson Wells isn't it.

So, to tell you the truth, there is nothing to worry about in tourist resort towns in Mexico (such as Playa del Carmen) I live in Cabo and even though we've had a few incidents involving drug cartel, it's only because we've had a few big players set up house here recently, and they were quickly made to leave. Now its quiet.

Its almost impossible to get caught up in any cartel stuff, or for that matter any political unrest in resort towns. The locals are only in the resorts town to make money...

you'd be crazy NOT to go on your holiday.

You'll get two answers here.
1. Mexico is dangerous--given by people who know this because they watch Fox News.
2. Mexico is safe except for the border towns--given be people who travel often in Mexico or people who live there.

I'm in the second category. The majority of Mexico is free from any problems and the tourist zones even more so. You may see an increased police and army presence, because Mexico does not want to have a problem and stop the flow of tourist dollars.

Click the link below to see what PDC looked like a few weeks ago. It will look like that when you get here--no shooting--I promise.

Cutie with a Bootie
In the news they only take the ugliest places in mexico, but they never show the nice places to visit, and the "drug war" is only in the north border states, and playa del carmen is in south of mexico its so safe there. =)

I just got back from two weeks in Playa del Carmen and the drug wars seem to have little or no effect on tourism. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. When I went everyone thought I was crazy as well but it was a safe trip. Have fun!

Traviesa
yea...i heard the same the thing! my friends and I were planning a trip to playa del carmen as well but heard the same thing and might chnage it to cancun now....we'll see what happens

good luck and be safe!!

Una Sirena en el Lago Oscuro
I'm not familiar with Playa del Carmen (sorry!), but the image of Mexico that you get from CNN is VERY distorted. These other posters have a point.

I lived in Mexico (Cuernavaca) and people tell me I'm crazy for entertaining thoughts of going back. I've been there and I keep abreast of what's going on down there (I have sources) and people think they know more about it than me because they watch CNN.

I'm sure that Cuernavaca is safe; it's probably safer than USA. The fact is, there are some horrible parts of Mexico, and there are some REALLY NICE parts. It's just that the horrible parts are all that the media wants to show us.

If you look at the US Dept of State webpage (they make nearly any country out to be a deathtrap), it's just a few regions that are so dangerous that Americans are advised to avoid them.

Oh no you don't have to worry about the drug wars affecting you!! I live in El Paso, the border city to Juarez which is probably the most deadliest, dangerous city in Mexico. So you'll be okay.

I sell insurance for people traveling into Mexico and have people traveling daily all over Mexico. What border are you crossing at? My suggestions to you would be to not hand out at the border towns. The worse are Juarez and Tiajuana. Tons of kids have been going to Mexico for spring break for the last few weeks already without any problems. Yes they are having drug wars right now but to date they are not harming any tourist. They are only hurting each other. If you would like more information feel free to write me back. Suzan

playa del carmen is the city on the mainland of mexico affiliated with cozumel (island across the water), because playa del carmen is the largest area able to dock the ferry.

idk if its really a good idea to go or not, but it was dangerous when i went several years ago. as long as you stay within a resort, i would say you are ok. and dont take valuable jewelry there, because there is really no way to keep it safe.
