Yes- It's very inexpensive for a couple days and if you get into an accident- they put you in jail until they are finished the investigation to see whose fault it is and how you will pay for the repairs if needed. With insurance they will "bail" you out and cover your backside and even bring an adjuster out to the accident site to help negotiate with the police and other driver. If you run into any trouble at all with a potentially bad cop (very unlikely these days...)- or break down somewhere immediatly call 078- it is tourist help and they can speak to the police for yo over your sell and often come help-- It's an excellent service and they are very influential.

I would. Dont chance anything down there. If you have an accident and get a corrupt police officer (ah-hum), it could save you. Either that, or carry a large amount of cash to "buy" your way out of harms way. Personally with all the stuff going on at the border right now, I would buy it. It is worth the peace of mind! |

Don't do it, even for a few hours. You could lose too much. They are legally allowed to jail you for a fender bender. Remember, it is Napoleonic Code of Law in Mexico. They assume guilty until you can prove you are innocent.
Driving around TJ can be hazardous. I've done it a lot, but it can be a pain. You are probably better off parking your car in the UABC duty free shop right before the border. Pick up some duty free goods (a certain amount gives you 2 free hours of parking), walk across the border and take a cab to the dentist. It's usually much faster to walk back across the border than to bring your car back. |
