It is very nice ...at least it's one of the bigger nicer cities in Mexico...actually if i had the money i would choose Guadalajara to move back..(.i'm from Mexico City by the way) right i'm in San Antonio and it's so different... Guadalajara is a nice size city with a lot of potential you should take a trip down there if you are not sure.. it's a big deal to move so far away but if you can make it and relatives are there ....go for it..your son will be exposed to his heritage..culture and be bilingual...this state is one of the most coloonial a richest of the country...good luck :)

My husband is from Monterrey... I have a son born in Monterrey and a daughter born in Texas. I lived several years in Monterrey (still have a house there), right now we are in Austin. Think about these things...

Regardless of a nice area... that will not be important... because you will be living with your mexican man... not in Tourist Town...

You will be around his family... you will have to adjust to the Mexican way of life... otherwise his mom will think of you as a spoiled brat american, and that will not be good. Several of your daily chores will (probably) have to be...

Get up early (4:30 - 5:30 am) fix his lunch for him to take to work. After honey is gone all the ladies "clean their house" start sweeping outside etc...

Realize this, he will be working a mexican job... "Good Money" is $100 per week. You are buying diapers $6/week. Paying rent $100/month. Paying bills $100/month... You won't have any extra money to go to McDonalds like you do here. I would advise giving english classes - charge $5 (dollars) per hour... that we help you out.

You may end up living with his family... it will be hard.
Possibly have no water heater (that means cold showers!) No washing machine (that means learning to scrub as great-great grandma did) your knuckles will bleed you will be tired - and if you can't get them as clean as mom... Oh, and wringing out jeans? He'll have to help... No dryer - if it is wet or cold... it will take 3 days for a pair of socks to dry.

In the cold months - electricity is expensive - no electric heaters! Gas is dangerous - turn off the gas heater at night (you freeze your tootsies off!)

Be sure you have your passport and your sons passport so you can come visit your family in Texas... don't expect it to be often... like I said, your husband will not be making enough money to send you every 6 months. Get your husband to get your baby's mexican citizenship so he won't have problems later in life.

Many other things that have to be learned and dealt with along the way. Don't get me wrong, I was able to wash clothes, take cold showers, make all home-made meals... and my husband helped me out alot teaching me along the way... as soon as he was able to save the money, he bought us a hot water heater and washing machine (I'm still waiting on the dryer!) I cried at times cuz I wanted a big mac that he wasn't able to buy me, and he lent me his shoulder. (Hey, one of the big highlights was taking me to Sonic on our anniversary!) And my in-laws are wonderful. They helped us out alot, too. You'll pic up the rest of your spanish along the way... but if he wants to go... I think you should, he came up here and learned your ways, he loves you and is proud of where he came from... be willing to move and learn his ways...And, maybe, like us, he will say, hey, lets go back to the states for a few years! You'll be glad you went!

well...i don't know if that's reason enough to move there! but, guadalajara is my favorite city in mexico. if i had to move permanently, i would certainly choose guadalajara.

I would agree that you should if you want to. You may want to visit for an extended period of time as it takes a little while to adjust to their way of life.

it'll be nice, if his family is there to support you guys just in case, than why not? do you know Spanish? what would you do when your down there? are you a stay at home mom or do u have a job? if you stay at home, i don't see why not. switchin jobs gets a little tougher with immigration papers, but it's not impossible.

I live in Guadalajara and it´s nice but don´t do it if you are not fully convinced. One good idea is to visit the place first and if you like it then make a decision. BTW that woman who said you probably won´t have a washing machine and water heater is kind of speaking about things she doesn´t know. You can´t find a place to live for 100 a month and 100 a week is NOT good money here, so if u want real advise from someone who actually lives here u can email me anytime.

ESSAYONS!
welll!if i were u id stay in the us till i retire!the job situation in mex is really bad, that and the "narcotrafficantes"down south!i mean it a nice place and all..but what kind of jobs are u gonna have??what part of the city are u gonna live in?

Just be very sure its where you and your son will be comfortable. Its a different culture, language, monetary unit, weights and measures, everything you come in contact with will be different. Its a great educational experience but there are often hardships that must be faced: medical care, schools, proper food and water. Learning the Spanish language is a must. Guadaljara is a very cultured city with all amenities. Go for it.

Well, not to shoot down everybody's optimistic tone but it's one thing to visit a place, it's another place to live in it. I've lived in Mexico for several years, both as a child and as an adult. I actually lived in Morelia, Michoacan (about 4 hours southeast of Guadalajara) and indeed it's beautiful too, but it's a dramatic lifestyle change.

You can only visit the hotspots a few handfull of times before it gets old. Grocery stores, schools, hospitals and house are not the same as they are here. Over there your typical joe doesn't have medical insurance, most of the transportation is by taxi or bus; most people walk everywhere (not a bad thing actually). Air Condition and financing, what's that? Simple things like ICE are hard to come by, different mannerism, higher crime rate per capita, decent jobs are scarce and your average educated person gets paid about $15-$20 a day... you get the picture? On the same note, there are positive things too, but you have to arrive with an open mind, empty wallets and willing to sacrifice many things we take for granted here...

Just give it some thought, trust me, it (meaning the lifestyle) is really not as pretty as it looks... why do you think SO many natives from Mexico are crossing the borders to come and work to send money over there... and they're not all from the country either, you have some big city peeps comin along too... Just some thoughts...
