Should I take my cell phone to Cabo San Lucas?

I have heard the long distance charges to Canada would be atrocious. So, if that is factual, it doesn't make much sense to bring my cell phone...any suggestions?

What kinda of long distance service on your cell do you have? Does it cover international calls? If so, then use your cell.

Yes, take your cellphone. Never travel internationally without having some reliable method for getting in touch with people from home. Make sure you call your carrier several weeks before you depart and tell them to turn ON your international calling, as it probably isn't enabled automatically. Avoid using it for sure, because it will be very expensive. Keep it turned off, but with you, so that all calls go directly to your voicemail, but you have an emergency communication method if you need it. Also, make sure everyone knows not to call you unless there is an emergency, so that you don't risk a huge cellphone bill upon your return. Have fun, Cabo is gorgeous!

If yours is a GSM cellphone you can take it and buy a SIM card of Telcel (Mexican largest cellphone provider) for just $10.00 American dollars.

You have to ask the prices to your service provider, but even if it is too expensive i recommend you to take it with you for any emergency.

You are right, most pay phones in Cabo (mexico) have crazy rates for calling Canada. I've heard people get home with bills for $15 per minute! Your best bet is to call collect....or even cheaper...go to an internet cafe and email someone instead.
Also, you may not be able to use your cell phone in Mexico until you activate your international calling. I believe the roam charges may be high as well. Check with your carrier for road post first but I think its about the same price as to call collect. Have a great trip!!

Check first if your carrier has service in Mexico, I know Verizon does.
The best way to call back home is buying a long distance card, back in your country that have a Mexican access number, AT&T is very good, or any other company, and get the access number from their web site, they should start with 001 800. You can use it in any public Telmex phone, they are everywhere.
You can buy Telmex calling cards down here, it will cost 5 pesos per minute (about 55 c Canadian).
Enjoy Cabo
