Playa del Carmen is like 500 miles away from Mexico City where most of the cases have occurred. While the Americans in NYC with the disease were in Cancun (a city that's 1 hour away from Playa), there has been no reported cases of the disease in Playa.
That's like saying you should avoid going to Seattle because there was a flu case in Texas. Sounds D-U-M-B right??
Go enjoy your trip, chances are you'll have a good time. I'm so not cancellig my trip to Playa in a few weeks!!! |

I'm on the same boat as you. My wife and I are traveling to the Riviera Maya area for 2 weeks starting May14th. Do some searches online with "Cancun Swine Flu" and you'll find a lot of blogs by travelers that just returned from the area. You will also find some blog entries by locals on tripadvisor.com if you search that site as well. Here's on blog I found: http://playazone.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/playa-del-carmen-is-it-safe-part-iithe-swine-flu/
As of now no reported cases of Swine flu in the entire state Quintana Roo or the Yucatan. We're still set to go. |

well, there has been no cases of swine flu in the area of cancĂșn and playa del carmen... and anyway this epidemic is already in the US, so if God has bad news for you, you'll get them anywhere. Just in case try to follow this rules:
1. wash your hands often and specially after grabbing common objects
2. Avoid touching your face with dirty hands
3. Avoid kissing or holding other people (I know that won't be too difficult for you, but mexicans are very physical)
4. Avoid crowded places
5. If you show any little sign run to the doctor, do not self-medicate
Good luck, you are going to a gorgeous place! |

Well, I think it's even more so to ask a bunch of strangers, or to care about what other people say...... that's a personal decision that you can and SHOULD make between the 2 of you. I personally think it is safe but if you think otherwise no one will convince you about it. |

If you are planning to go from the UK it seems you have no choice as they are not flying folks out there.
From anywhere else then i would give it a miss anyway |

I just so happen to be going to Playa del Carmen next week. It was a trip I won off of the radio a few months back and I am definitely still going unless the airline cancels the flight or the radio station backs out. As previously mentioned, there are NO cases of swine flu in Playa del Carmen and if you're staying at a nice resort & Spa (which I'm sure you are because it's your honeymoon), you'll be completely safe. 5 star resorts and spa's make a tremendous effort to ensure the grounds and employees are clean and healthy because they have a reputation to maintain etc.. During these times they will triple check safety procedures just to make sure all of their guests are thoroughly enjoying their stay. It's the one and two star establishments that I would really worry about. Most of the swine flu transmissions occur due to large droplets through coughing and sneezing, so in other words avoid individuals with obvious flu like symptoms and clean all hard surfaces with a disinfectant as much as possible. I am going to drink plenty of liquids and take my multi-vitamin as well as my vitamin C tablets every day while there and worse case scenario, take TAMIFLU upon return, that will definitely due the trick! |

We are leaving May 8 for a week in Playa del Carmen and we are still going....there are cases all over the United States and unless you stay confined to your house, you run the same chance of being exposed in your own city as being in the Yucatan! Let's all use a little common sense here! Don't let the media hype get to you! |

Hey Robert,
Are things still open in Playa del Carmen? My husband and I are supposed to go on Sunday and we're trying to decide whether to cancel. |

My wife and I are leaving Friday morning for Playa Del Carmen. I am not worried too much as we will take measures to make sure we wash our hands and not go to crowded markets-discos and places of public gatherings. Our resort has a doctor on duty and is a very clean resort.
I will not change our plans to go; the Swine flu is here in the US as well and I am going about my daily routine. |

We are scheduled to go on 6/20 for a family vacation. We are going to Riu Palace, Mexico. I have contacted the hotel and they are hyper-sensitive to the issue. They clean everything every hour and advise lots of hand sanitizer. Go, have fun, get married and enjoy life. |
