Would it be wise to travel to mexico in search of a cheap VW Bug??
i'm in need of a cheap VW Bug and i know that Mexico has been producing them up until 2003. i live in southern cali and am in search for a cheap, reliabe, economical car so my question is would it be worth it to take a road trip to Tijuana are wherever to buy a VW Bug??

There are a few issues you will need to address before importing a vehicle on your own. Normally when you go to a dealership, this is all done for you. First of all, you will need to get a vehicle with CA emissions. Just 49 state emissions won't do it, so you may have some trouble there. Conversions are very expensive. Second, you are going to have to deal with customs yourself. You will have to file the paperwork to bring it into the country and pay the US tarriffs and then file the papers to have it titled in your state and pay the taxes. I am not sure what this will cost you (it depends on the vehicle price), but it is something you need to check out first because no money means no border crossing. It is also of note that the Mexican VW have had significant problems as compared to their German couterparts. It is little, annoying failures for the most part, but remember the warranty provided with a vehicle is different depending on the country you live in. Do not assume the vehicle in Mexico will come with the same warranty as a US vehicle and make sure you contact the motor company's customer service line to make sure that the warranty will be upheld in a us dealer. Personally, I think it's way too much trouble and you'll probably end up losing out anyway between the time, the money and the headache, but it's up to you. Add up all the charges you would incur if you imported your own vehicle and compare it to the price you can negotiate from a local dealership.

You may want to check and make sure that you can cross the border into California with the bug. If it does not meet California EPA specs, I don't think they will let you in. But yes, a VW Bug from Mexico would be a great car and economical on gas. They are not made as well at the old bugs used to be, but they are a good little car.

Here is the problem. You will have enormous difficulties (If it is possible at all) to get it registered in the US. I brought back a US built, US plated car once that had my Mexico address on the title. It took an entire day and a 'class one' inspection where the actually took the fender off my car to verify the VIN number. Just not worth it!

Forget it. In addition to the problem making legal for California, used cars in Mexico cost more than in the US.

I think it would be better to just buy one in the U.S. Try www.autotrader.com

Not all things are cheaper in other countries, mind you... I had "heard" that cars are more expensive in Mexico than here in the states - sometimes as much as 2x as expensive... That's what I learned back in "school", leastways, as a cultural aside in my Spanish class, and I've encountered this in play in several ways since then... My teacher at the time claimed that cars were terribly expensive to the point where that's why many Mexicans learn to fix their own cars, etc., to work to keep them in good health. I have a relative, too, that's from Mexico, and he would buy trucks and resell them in Mexico for profit - I think there was probably plenty of profit to be had in driving from Georgia to Mexico for the resell. I know in Nicaragua, an A/C wall unit is considered a "luxury item" that costs the equivalent of thousands of dollars... Watch out and price a bug before you attempt to buy.

VW bugs are sure cheap on gas. To get a good reliable one you are looking in the hood of 5 to 10K USD
You can do just as well in the states but with more metal and about the same fuel efficiency for like a small compact 4 cylinder.

OR
sure why not. not sure what it takes to transfer a vehicle from another country into Cali. that would be a good thing to ask your local dmv office.

best wishes

I don't think it would be because you'll have to pay a lot of taxes and so on when you enter into California. By the end of it all you might be paying the same amount.
