Safety is not the big issue...money is. If you are rich enough to live in Mexico without working...ok. If you need to work , forget it. To legally reside in Mexico , you must have at least $1500 a month provable income from outside of Mexico so you can qualify for an FM3 visa. If you cannot provide documentation of at least that much income per month, you cannot qualify for a residence visa. To work in Mexico, you must find an employer who will hire you and write a letter to immigration stating that he has hired you for a job he cannot find a Mexican citizen for. That means you must be highly educated and have rare job skills. There are many unemployed Mexicans, including many university educated ones. Jobs in Mexico, even professional ones pay about 1/10th of the same job in the U.S. If you do not need to work, and have sufficient income, then you can get an FM3 and there are many great places to live. You have to consider your future too...having enough to live on in the future, retirement. I know people who came to mexico to live, never thinking about the fact that they were not going to have any kind of retirement fund, then end up old, and with nothing. Think it through and be prepared.

It depends on where you live. Most of Mexico is safe. The most dangerous areas are border towns were the drug gangs are fighting each other and the police.

Mexico City has a bad reputation. I was a bit concerned when I decided to spend the entire month of August there. After a few days. I felt safe. I also knew which parts of the city to avoid.

Is there a town that you know well that you want to move to? If not, before you move to Mexico, visit and find a place that you like. Based on your interests I could make suggestions.

I just noticed you posted this under Zacatecas.
Zacatecas is safe and one of the most interesting cities in Mexico.
I have visited other towns in the Estado de Zacatecas:
Jerez, Guadalupe and Sombrereto and found all of them safe.

All depends also what do you do and with who you become close. Try to be and get involved with nice people, and you will be just fine. I would recommend you Zacatecas, Queretaro, Guanajuato, San miguel de Allende, Merida.

marci knows best
As others have said, Mexico is safe in most areas, and not so safe in the border towns. Zacatecas is a lovely city, one of my favorites, and as safe as any city of its size in the U.S.

For a realistic view, get copies and read
"Head for Mexico" by Don Adams

My friend, Mexico is a very nice country, and with very nice people.
It is true that in some places there are bad things, but is like in a lot of other countries.
Some cities are not recomended to live in, like Mexico City, which is very crowded, poluted and not very safe.

But Zacatecas, San Miguel de Ayende, Mérida, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Pachuca ( where I live ), Toluca, Veracruz, and many other cities are very peaceful and very nice to live at.

So, if you decide to come, be sure that you will be safe.

Welcome to México Amiga !

Hello Rosa, where do you live now? your profile says Zacatecas. Mexico is really not anymore dangerous than the USA and far less dangerous than a lot of places. Only the drug cartels are causing violeence between themselves or with the Government law enforcement. Stay smart and alert and you will be safe. let me know if I can help you.
