Hot chocolate is not a native drink. Native mexicans used to make mix chocolate and chile to make the drink, it was very spicy, unlike the sweetened hot chocolate we drink nowadays. Cacao (not cocoa) beans were also used to produce alcoholic beverages.
Cacao beans were often used as some kind of currency. It was a luxury item. |
