Where do you live now? There are more confirmed cases in areas of the US than in PV. You might be safer there. My concern would be travel difficulties due to panic over the swine flu. 40,000+ people die every year in the US due to the flu, but it's old news and the media doesn't have an animal name for it (see bird flu), so it's not all over the news. Also, there is a hospital in PV for foreigners (Americanized).

I would go there anytime in a heartbeat. As of today the authorities have NOT confirmed any case in the state of Jalisco, where PV is located...... so I don't know how the other poster can be so sure. Other states are affected but not there. So I would definitely go there.

Amanda
YES!!! we are leaving on the 19th of may!
take some antibacterial wipes and stear clear of sick people!

KJ
If I was allowed to leave my home province I would be in in PV visiting friends don't listen to the people here or on the news. It is you decision but you will probably regret not going.

I am living 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta now (April 29/09). We're in the thick of things here. Two days ago, the government closed down ALL bars and night clubs for at least a week, and schools all over Jalisco and neighbouring states are being closed down today.

People throughout PV are wearing masks, and you can't get anti-bacterial hand cleanser anywhere. I work for a resort here, and they are not accepting any Mexican nationals as guests. Since schools have been closed down in Mexico City & other places, the fear is that unknowingly affected carriers of Swine Flu will flock to the coast for impromptu holidays.

Two cases of this flu have been confirmed in my little town of 18,000 inhabitants. That may not seem like a lot, but the fact is that it IS here.

At first, we all thought it was fearmongering by the media, but as of yesterday, we are taking the situation very seriously indeed. Flights to Mexico have been suspended by air carriers in the U.S. and Canada, so you may not be able to get out of town anyway.

Your travel insurance should allow for cancellation due to government travel advisories, so check it carefully and contact your travel agent.

I'm sure you were looking forward to your holiday, but I certainly wouldn't risk it. No way.

I would not go...I mean it would be bad if you got the flu down there and if you happen to come back with it you could end up giving it to your friends and family...coworkers..personally I would not take the risk. Better to wait till it all blows over...change the dates or something?

gramof6
I really wouldn't.It is a favorite city of mine but I would not take the chance.

Derek
No way no how... if you get sick and start throwing up in Mexico - what are you gonna drink to get hydrated? Can't drink the water... lol
