TRAVELING TO CANCUN...SWINE FLU?

Hello, I am traveling to cancun between 7/13/2009 and will return to the US on 7/20/2009....This is my honeymoon that I have booked a while ago, but with the recent news of the "swine flu", should I cancel/change my trip or not?

Definately do not cancel at this time.

There is NO SWINE FLU Epidemic in Cancun, I know, I live and work here, and have my family including my 1 year old daughter here. People are taking precautions as they are right across the whole Country, but this thing has an incubation period of about a week to 10 days, so by Mid May at the latest you will know better what is happening in Mexico.

Mexico is such a big Country, and the Media are so wrong to say avoid Mexico as a whole for travel, there have been only incidents of the virus in the North of Mexico and Oaxaca currently. How would this look if they said don't travel to the USA even though there are only cases around Texas.

Many of the reported cases you will find are only SUSPECTED... the Media has everybody running scared, so the number of suspected cases is Sky High.

Fingers Crossed this will all get back to some sort of normality soon and people will be able to resume their Cancun holidays without all the Media attention and hype.

Come to Cancun, you will have a Great Holiday and wonder what all this was about !!!

If you are still unsure and would like to speak to us here in Cancun our toll free number is 1 888 335 1996

That is in mid July! That is a long time away. So by then, we will well know what is going on.

CAITLIN
No, I wouldn't worry. First off, you are still several months out from your trip. The chance of containing the outbreaks in that time is very high. Second, Although a few NYC students got sick, the reports vary as to whether or not they were in fact in Cancun or somewhere else in Mexico. By most reports at this time, the outbreaks are not centered around Cancun. Third, drugs like Tamiflu appear to be effective against the swine flu and the cases in the US have been mild even though they have a relationship with a people who have traveled to Mexico.

In this case, time is on your side. Nations around the world are acting now to contain any outbreaks so that it doesn't become a long lasting problem. I bet by July, swine flu will be a distant memory but if you are worried about it, ask your doctor for a Tamiflu Rx and have it filled prior to going away. If you start to feel sick, begin the treatment. But at this time, it is too early to panic and cancel your trip.

My parents are going to Cancun this summer and my boyfriend and I are going in the fall. Neither my parents nor I are cancelling our trips at this time. It's not the time to panic. My advice to you would be to wait until the end of May or mid-June to see where the news goes on this before you decide to change your trip plans.

You need to get a life! Why worry about something which is 2.5 months away. Nobody knows how worse it's going to get. I leave for Cancun to get married in 5 days!

I am going to Cancun tomorrow for a week and have no thoughts of canceling. I have a prescription for Tamiflu that I never filled so I am having it filled today. I will ask the pharmacist if I should start taking it today or wait in case I experience symptoms.

I fear the media is blowing all of this out of proportion. I'm sure more people are dying from the regular flu.

mary
i am going to cancun on the 29th of april and we arent worried. i talked to our family doctor and he said it is mostly hype and media fear. we have prescriptions for tamiflu since my dad is a diabetic. right now if you go by the amount of cases and proximity then we are worse off here in michigan. michigan is much closer to nyc then cancun is to mexico city. as of right now the world health organization has said there is no reason to not travel internationally. if i was going to mexico city then by all means i would be canceling. if you are really worried about it then cancel, but 2 months away is a long time and if there is still a threat at that time then you wont be charged to rebook. right now i could reschedule for free :)

Hello123
Thats so far away I would hope by then you should be fine. I just got back from Cancun on 4/11 and none of us have been sick (knock on wood!). It doesnt make sense because I read that the NYC students got sick after going to Cancun, but then somewhere else I read that no cases have been reported in Cancun. Who knows. I would wait a little longer and see what happens with it. I'm going on a cruise to Cozumel in June, that has me a little nervous now too!

I am also worried! We are going on our honeymoon to Playa Mujeres, Mexico (near Cancun). However, we are leaving June 1st!!! I am very worried about this. I guess we will contact our booking agent as suggested. Hopefully it will be over by then!

im a nurse and im going to mexico next week. If you do things you should normally do such as wash your hands, cover your sneeze /cough and avoid people coughing/sneezing on you! than you should be fine, worst case scenario if you get it just go to your doctor. It is A flu which is A virus which we do nothing for unless you have complications. People in the US die from flu that we see EVERY year (the number is in the 20-30,000 's) so i wont ruin a honeymoon in a beautiful resort for over-hype. Most people that die is from complications and lack of medical treatment or that have a long medical history. SO that said you can wait it out and see or change your plans, as far as me i will be ecstatic to lay on the beach and be papmered with less tourist next week! Good luck and congratulations!

I have been studying every news article, blog, and information from, our Center for Disease Control,(CDC), and World Health Organization.WHO.
This is what I have gathered:
The virus is spreading all over the world, so there really is no safe hiding place!
We are taking our trip to Puerto Murelos in Mexico on the 6th of May.
The Cancun area, and further down the coast line, has No cases of the Swine Flu! Yet in America we do, so......... you have to think about this.
Also there are 40 cases reported in the United States that are confirmed now, yet only 20 confirmed cases in Mexico!!
Yes , I do think we have to be careful, but I think the world is starting to PANIC, AND THAT CREATES FEAR!
Wow, maybe Aids is far worse?Dah!
Every time someone sneezes now, everyone is going to freakout!
Just take precautions, get a lot of rest, eat well, use vitamins, wash hands a lot, carry the hand sanitiser with you where ever you go, and always cleanse after handling money! Take a mask with you on the plane, maybe.
If you also want to protect yourself there is a drug called " Tamiflu", that you can get online, and the CDC, said that by taking this before you go, CAN be beneficial to your health in preventing acquiring the Swine Flu.
So , I went online and found out how to get some, so my whole family will take this before we go.
They also recommend " Chemoprophylaxis", for non-high risk travelers to Mexico. They did not give a brand name , but there also is another anti-viral medicine called " zanamivir' (Brand name, Relenza).
Call your physician and see what he can recommend for you!
I called mine also!

Hope this does some good. Check out " Cdc.gov/travel" WHO, AND

I too am traveling to Cancun between 7/10 and 7/13. I have been advised by many to just wait and see... numerous things could happen between now and then! It's too soon to tell... I am in that same boat, however, and it is very scary! Tough decision to make, but I agree, I think it's too soon to make it!

Hello, There is NO health RISK in this area. There are NO travel alerts for this area. The strong flu is all over the world, not just Mexico city. Please call me directly in Cancun at 1-888-335-1996 I have lived here 8 years. Anyone that says Mexico is not safe is an idiot, plain and simple.

Andrew S
go !!!! just make sure to wash your hands alot :D

marci knows best
No one knows how this will play out, but the airlines and the Mexican government are being very careful. If this gets more serious, scientists say they can develop a vaccine very quickly. There are no confirmed cases in the resort areas.

Here is a good site for current information.

I just changed my booking of our 7-day trip in Cancun on May1st-8th, we're definitely not taking the chance. I mean, what's the point if you're worried & suspicious during your vacation? Plus, it's also about the people around you, it's a PUBLIC health issue.

So far this is the latest update on the swine flu outbreak: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2009/04/26/mexico-swine-flu.html

Although up to this point NO case of swine flu has been reported in Cancun, some of the infected people in US & Canada had visited & returned from Cancun. http://www.cdnn.info/news/travel/t090426.html

Since you still have 2 months ahead things may brighten up but don't forget the outbreak situation can get worse also (which is more likely to be the case). Most airlines are waiving change fees for flights to Mexico City & Cancun. I believe you have a good chance of getting a full refund of your hotel booking at this point and I do suggest you cancel it. If things get better, you can always book it again later. Find out if you can get a refund on your ticket (if you're under travel insurance you definitely can), if not, take a look at other destinations and change your ticket. If you guys really want to go to Cancun, you may wanna wait and monitor the situation there until it gets closer to the departure date. In my case, the airline will refund the ticket fare ONLY if the flights are cancelled, which is what I'm hoping to happen in the next few days.

I have listed a few useful sites below, hope this helps ^.^

As far as a vaccine goes.. Yes they will eventually create one. But our idea of "creating one very quickly" isn the same as scientists. In general it will take 4-6 months for a vaccine to be created and have the first batch ready for people. So for now everyone just travel at their own risk.

DON'T GO!

Thunder-bolt
I would advice you to contact your travel / booking agent or your health department and get a full knowledge and understanding of the risk....as this flu appears to be highly contagious.

With this academic i am sure you would be honored back a refund or change for a later date.

I can see that your trip is in July, maybe by that time it would be under control.

But to be on the safe side.....i would change my honeymoon to another destination.....as there is a BIG wide world waiting to be discovered by you.

You and your wife deserved to live happily ever after taking your vow's.....dont allow a mind set plan (Cancun) put a spoke in your future.

the flu is all over the world in very small amount. Go to Cancun and enjoy your honeymoon. Just don't be rubbin up on all the local mexicans. You have more of a chance dying on the plane there than contracting swine flu. And if you do get sick... go to the doctor and you'll get better. It's the flu, people - this is not "I Am Legend"!

Scottish couple gets swine flu on honeymoon

Good luck to your trip if you still want to go soon.
But for July, just wait and see.

Pat
I definitely would not go, change to another destination. Most bigger resorts also have properties in other countries and would probably make the change with little or no out of pocket expense.
My reason for saying this, we just got back from Cancun April 7, and we're pretty sure my husband had it. This large outbreak hadn't happened yet, so the doctor didn't know to check for that, but he had all the symptoms, and it took him 8-9 days to get well. He was VERY sick!!! DON'T RISK IT!!!

Randal K
If you rather raise your risk of getting swine flu and your honeymoon is more important than it then go. If your don't want to risk you and somebody else getting the swine flu because you care about them, then definitely cancel it. :D
