Where I live there is a lot of fruit and vegetable picking, fishing and construction. Many, many small stores that you wonder how they survive ... but being self employed is better than not being employed

this is a really hard question...because there are so many types of mexicans. there are many with more money than i will ever have! huge homes, housekeepers, nice cars, summer homes, ranches, etc... they wear clothing from the US, working in nice office buildings and go to private schools. there are other mexicans who live in very small homes downtown, take taxis, work in a retail shop or as a teacher, and live paycheck to paycheck. and others who live in a dirt type home, on a dirt road, and sell gum on a street corner or do housework in someone's home. these people live day to day, hand to mouth. so....that's a really vast questions!

i can say that if a mexican has a pet, it's a dog...i only say 3 cats the whole time i lived there. there are lots of street dogs too. they don't consider the dog and equal member of the family, so it may or may not go to the vet, get groomed, etc... and it may live on the roof, or in the home, or maybe the patio. i have seen several people with little canary type birds in cages, that is a popular pet.

family is important, meals are eaten around 2 or 2:30 and the whole family tries to be there for that. they take time for friends and family, even business is done in person, over drinks or food. they don't leave messages, you go in person or you speak at length on the phone...nothing impersonal. they are consistenly late...and that's normal. also mexicans will frequently say what they think you want to hear, rather than the truth, so as not to offend you. for example, "of course i'll be there at 2pm" and then they don't show up...but this was because they didn't want to say "heck no i don't want to see you at 2pm"

on more thing...a mexican living in mexico is TOTALLY different than a chicano person living in the US. any mexican will tell you that. mexicans don't particularly enjoy the chicanos and they don't understand why they have "given up" on mexico. i think it's difficult for them to conceptualize that many chicanos were born in the US...that is their home....they haven't actually given up on mexico because they've never lived there. but since they tend to claim heritage...it's confusing to many mexicans.

these are TOTAL generalizations so i hope i don't offend anyone. they are just based on my personal experiences living in mexico, and my mexican friends and their opinions.

The jobs are pretty much the same as the ones in the states just that they pay alot less and most require no kind of college education.
There is a lot of corruption which is why you are either really rich or really poor in Mexico. There isnt really a middle classs. People tend to have a lot of dogs and birds as pets. Cats are not as popular , donkeys, horses and pigs are. Families are usually tight knit and It is not unusual to see multi generations under one roof. People dont nessassarily move out of mom and dads house just cause they got married. The household just grows and grows. The towns are usually in pretty bad shape, especially the streets. Every town has a plaza with a church, and that is where the town meets on weekends and that is where tourists can usually be seen in our markets, buyin crafts made by the locals. There is a lot of povery in Mexico, but he people are humble and do not take things for granted as I feel we do here. Going there really makes me appreciate the small things and really makes me feel so grateful towards my parents, who came to this country and worked their butts off to make sure we had a better life. My father is a successful business owner worth about 6 million in property and assets throgh honest hard work. Mexicans are hard workers and that is part of our culture, to work hard for what you have. I was born here in the US, but my parents are from Mexico and we live minutes away from the Texas/Mexico Border so I experience both cultures and I would not have it any different.

well i guess the only way for u to understand would be to go its fun but hard. we usualy only have dogs and we do live in houses and have streets but most are dirt and the dirt is red. there is a church in the middle of the city and there is a plaza a place where the town comes to hang out, the church is always the tallest billding and its the richest, event thought the rest are poor the church is all ways clean and beautiful so ppl go there all the time.

It depends where you go. The houses are much different than here. They are more like town homes. In most places they work early in the morning and come home around 3-5 for dinner with the family and then return back to work until 8pm. For the most part they're very kind and calm people. Hard working and strive to get a good education if possible. College is very important. My husband is from mexico and we visit every year. I recomend visiting because you will really understand better the culture of the mexican population that live in the US. If you get a chance i recomend somewhere in the center of the country, the borders are dangerous and americanized and also the beaches are americanized too.

Where I live near the US Border Mexicans are very Americanized, familiar with popular culture. They have TV, computers, cell phones. However, a close family structure prevails. Recent celebrations included the reverence of our Lady of Guadalupe on her special day, with hand made floats and costumes and a march for many miles on the highway. Mardi Gras is a big deal in Rosarito and Ensenada. Most Dads in our area have jobs in construction and the family eats well. Everybody has dogs whether we want them or not. They are often not treated as pets, unfortunately and spaying and neutering is a new concept. Cats don't last long unless they are homebound.

It may be better to make a narrower question, this is way too much. But I'd say we have the same jobs as UK or US do: teachers, doctors, salespeople, bank managers, etc, etc, etc, you name it! Pets same as everywhere else: dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, etc, etc, etc. Mexican culture goes back to hundreds of years from the native americans til now, too wide to explain. Family culture, most families are very close and most children live with their parents until they get married unless they have to move to study or work. Most of mexicans are catholic, but only a few actually follow the religion, most people only go to church for weddings and events. Take into account that the social differences are overwhelming (sp?) as someone mentioned, millioners, there's a middle class and then the poor. Each part of the society liead totally different lives in many aspects.
