Driving from VA to Guadalajara only stopping for a few hours of sleep twice and gas took me roughly 35 hours------ it should be pretty close to my time. Just keep your doors locked and you should be fine. I am a 24 year old white female and I was alone the whole drive and I had absolutely no problems! |

You will need to get Mexican car ins...not all that expensive. See 1st site below. The car permit can be purchased at the border or at the nearest mexican consulate...which I recommend as lines at the border office can be very long. Your tourist card will be about.$22.00. The car permit is only $15.00 if you are entering with a 6 month tourist card. Gas is currently about $2.80 a gallon in Mexico. There will be tolls on the highway. See 3rd site about driving in Mexico. See 4th site for a recommended route. Add a few hours to the time it tells you, It ALWAYS takes longer. You will also need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas....can buy at large bookstores or order at Amazon.com. I do not know what you mean by a "passcard", unless you are referring to a passport. You do not currently need a passport to DRIVE to and from Mexico. See last site to see that you currently need a photo I.D. and birth certificate. After June 2009, passports will be required. Use your common sense, and you will be safe. I am a single American woman , drove to southern Mexico from the U.S. and drive all over with no problems. Best to have a friend or family member in Guadalajara meet you on the outskirts of town...I have never driven there, but have been told traffic is horrible, and you could get lost in the city very easily. |

Driving at night is not suggested. Lock your doors and you've been warned.
I bet you got 12 hours to get to the border. And another 24 hours of driving to get to Guadalajara - probably more.
Keep in mind you probably have $300 to $400 in all the fees and requirements to take your car across. Mexican insurance will be the most expensive. Need temp. tags and other little things.
Toll highways are the best route, but again the tolls are pretty steep.
If you find yourself needing help finding your way - stop a police officer and pay him to escort you through a given town.

Driving in Mexico is unbelievably expensive (tolls, gas, checkpoints, crooked cops) make it prohibitive. It rarely pays unless you have three or four people in the car.
Unfortunately shipping things back to the states is also expensive.
One way toll to Guadalajara from:
Nogales 1,259 pesos.
Cd Juarez 1,072 pesos.
Matamoras 874 pesos.
Reynosa 824 pesos.
Nuevo Laredo 733 pesos. |

It would take you about 4 to 5 day, it's safe if you know your way. But you need to make sure your car has an alarm system, it's easy way for you to make sure your safe.
you should enter Mexico through Nogales, Az.
or go on airplane it's cheaper, gas is at 5.00 dollars |
