Driving through Mexico is a great way to see the country. Driving is more dangerous than the U.S. due to bad road conditions, so make sure to take it slow and do not drive at night. It may take more like 3 or 4 days to make it to Mexico City- taking the toll roads will make the trip much faster, but will be expensive. I just drove through Mexico on my way to South America (fall 2008) and it costs on average about $25 - $45 US dollars for a budget hotel room and about $10 for dinners. You can eat much cheaper by using street vendors, or picking up food at grocery stores. Check out: http://www.drivetheamericas.com for more detailed info including border crossings.

Just make sure to get your car insured for mexico. There are places near the border that will sell it to you.

I lived in Mexico for many years but I knew lots of folks before moving there and even with that advantage I would not dare take the type of trip you're planning and I speak spanish. However, no matter how good your spanish you are definitely putting yourself in great danger by travelling alone. My advise would be DON'T DO IT.

Not in my opinion. Your Spanish better be very good, and you better not appear to be a wealthy American or you may end up kidnapped. Mexico is VERY dangerous right now.

Mexico City is in Mexico which is in North America not Central. Also a civic on Mexican roads is a bad idea they are not like roads here. "heavily modded" your a kook!!! its still a piece civic. Have a bueno trip bring cash for the Federales.
