I don't know where you are leaving from but the bus takes approximately 12-15 hours from Brownsville/McAllen, TX and can take as long as 24 hours from El Paso...even long from TJ. Mexico buses are no uncomfortable in general, there are many nice bus lines, but the trip takes a long time. The good thing is that most of the trip is usually at night. Make sure you spend a little extra to get an executive class bus where the seats are larger and recline like first class airline seats. The names of the bus companies changes depending on what part of the country you are leaving from. The most comfortable is ETN and costs less than $100 one way from the southeast TX border to GDL. Don't go to Mexico City and then transfer as that will take at least 19 hours plus the time you have to wait in Mexico City.
There is no longer any passenger train service in Mexico except for a tourist train through the Copper Canyon.
Sometimes you can get an air only flight to Puerto Vallarta through a charter company and then you can take the bus to GDL (about 4-5 hours). |

These are all good answers, ETN is a very nice bus line
Here is a site to watch for cheap fares. I recently found Denver to Guadalajara direct, round-trip for $250 with Frontier. |

There is no longer any cheap, quick way to get to Mexico from the US. While the bus is less expensive, you're talking about a minimum of 18 hours on a cramped bus, one way. The last time I took a bus from C. Juarez to Mexico City about 5 years ago, it cost about $80 one way and was quite uncomfortable. Plus you still have to get to the border, unless you live in some place like San Antonio. If you decide to go via the bus, DO NOT take a second-class bus, no matter how much cheaper it is. For all intents and purposes, the train no longer exists, except for the private Copper Canyon railway.
If you live in California, here is what I do:
take a Southwest plane to San Diego, take a Greyhound bus that goes to the Tijuana airport and get your tourist card taken care of at the border, and then fly Aviacsa Airlines. They used to have a special internet deal on Thursdays, where the flights are a lot cheaper than normal, but I don't know if that still exists. The only downfall is that you only get the national allowance for luggage, which is a lot less than the international allowance. Be aware that Mexico's peak season begins in April, but July/August are cheaper.
You might want to check out this site; it seems to be good:

Not sure where you're coming from, but if you're somehwere in Mexico, you can take ETN (Enlaces Terrestres Nacionales). Best Bus and the rates are really good... anywhere from $30-$70US, executive class... |
